Emerging Concerns in New Jersey Water Systems, featuring Mary-Anna Holden, Commissioner, NJ Board of Public Utilities.

Panel Discussion I: Emerging concerns in surface water systems.

Emerging concerns in freshwaters include both synthetic or naturally occurring chemicals or microorganisms that are with known or suspected adverse ecological and/or human health effects. Many of those emerging chemical/microorganisms are not routinely monitored and/or their effects on human and ecological health remain unclear.

Panelists:

  • Patricia Ingelido, Assistant Director, Division of Water Supply and Geoscience, NJDEP
  • Jim Waltman, Executive Director, The Watershed Institute
  • Heather Desko, Senior Watershed Protection Specialist, NJ Water Supply Authority
  • Meiyin Wu, Director NJ Center for Water Science and Technology, Montclair State University

Panel Discussion II: Emerging concerns in drinking water systems.

Emerging contaminants in drinking water are chemicals that recently have been shown to occur and have been identified as a potential environmental or public health risk. Many emerging contaminants are seriously challenging New Jersey conventional drinking water treatment systems, because they were designed for removal of traditional pollutants but cannot provide a technically viable and/or cost and energy-efficient treatment for persistent contaminants of emerging concerns.

Panelists:

  • Jessie Gleason, Drinking Water and Public Health Project, NJ Department of Health
  • Peter Keenan, Senior Director, American Water Engineering
  • Yang Deng, Professor Earth and Environmental Studies, Montclair State University
