From Swastika to Jim Crow: Film and Conversation

Presented by Dr. Lillie Edwards, Professor Emerita, Drew University

In the early 1930s, Jewish professors were forced out of their universities by the Nazis. Escaping to America they found - to their surprise - both anti-Semitism and suspicion of German refugees. Eventually, they found teaching positions in surprising places - black colleges in the still-segregated South.

From Swastika to Jim Crow documents this mind-opening encounter. How did students and teachers come together in mutual understanding? And what can we learn from this unique moment in American history?

Dr. Lillie Edwards, Professor Emerita of History and African-American Studies at Drew University, will introduce the film and lead a discussion afterward.

Dr. Edwards received her doctorate from the University of Chicago. During 24 years at Drew, she served as founding Director of Pan-African Studies and Director of American Studies. She has worked throughout her career to bring African-American studies to the public.
