The act of walking is arguably one of the most basic constants of the human condition.  Walking is, for those inhabiting a contemporary urban landscape, often a solo endeavor of short duration, covering the “last mile” between destination points and transportation nodes.  But, there are creative and cultural spaces where walking serves as a shared modality for deep engagement and contemplation, a space where both an investigation and a heightened awareness of our internal and external environments is undertaken. In this research and practice-based class, we will explore as a collective some of these cultural spaces as formed through the artistic practice of Dérive, and the act of creating and walking labyrinths on both the MSU campus and in Paris, France.

While this course is closely aligned with programs in the visual and performing arts, urban and environmental studies, as well as history and anthropology, students from all majors are welcome and encouraged to apply.

Presented by Program Leaders Chris Kaczmarek and Stephanie Spitz.
