Santiago, Italia (conversation about Moretti's documentary - Nov. 22 at 3pm EST)
Join us on Sun Nov. 22 3pm EST for Santiago, Italia: Stories of Refugees of the Past in Today’s World of Tightening Borders, a virtual conversation that will focus on the fascinating story of Chilean refugees supported by the Italian government after the 1973 golpe by Pinochet, as portrayed in Nanni Moretti's award-winning documentary Santiago, Italia (2019). Featuring Maura Morales Bergmann (the documentary's cinematographer) and Jaime Baeza Freer (Political Science, Universidad de Chile), the event comes at a historical moment for Chile after the recent referendum and creates the opportunity to address issues of democracy and human rights across countries then and now.
Note that the documentary will be accessible for streaming Nov 15-23: details will only be sent to participants registered for the online conversation.
The event marks the beginning of a partnership between Inserra/MSU and the prestigious Academy of Italian Cinema David di Donatello Awards, the Italian equivalent of the Academy of Motion Pictures in the U.S. It also marks the launching of a new event series called "Dentro/Afuera: The Interconnections between Italian and Latin American/Spanish Cultures," designed in connection with our campus' designation as Hispanic-serving institution.
