Rob Kapilow at the Piano

Join us for the 2021-22 academic year for a reimagined professional residency program.  The week-long residencies include a rotation of eleven top rated artists and ensembles.

Each residency will contribute to an on-going exploration of the ever-changing landscape of music today, introducing students by example to a future that will be, at times, less traditional. Through the multiple opportunities to learn and collaborate with guest artists, students will broaden their understanding of their future musical careers.

For over 30 years, Rob Kapilow has brought the joy and wonder of music – and unraveled some of its mysteries – to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Characterized by his unique ability to create an “aha” moment for his audiences and collaborators, whatever their level of musical sophistication or naiveté, Kapilow’s work brings music into people’s lives: opening new ears to musical experiences and helping people to listen actively rather than just hear.

Reserve your seats now.

“What Makes it Great” with Kodak Quartet

“You could practically see the light bulbs going on above people’s heads…Kapilow’s audience could decipher the music in a new, deeper way. It was the total opposite of passive listening.”
Philadelphia Inquirer

We hear great classical masterpieces all the time – in the concert hall, at the movies, on television, and on the radio. But what makes these masterpieces so great? Join conductor/composer/author Rob Kapilow and the Kodak String Quartet for an entertaining, enlightening evening that will take you deeply inside the world of Antonin Dvorak's string quartet masterpiece--the American String Quartet.  The program features a first half of discussion and demonstration with Kapilow and the performers looking closely at selected passages from the quartet followed by a full performance of the piece. Whether you’re brand new to classical music or a seasoned aficionado, we guarantee that you’ll walk out with new ears.

COVID-19 HEALTH & SAFETY The 2021-22 performances at the Cali School of Music will take place in person. To help protect the health and safety of audiences, artists, staff, and our greater community, patrons are required to complete MSU Hawk Check (https://bit.ly/cali-hawk-check), wear masks at all times for all performances and all performances will require proof of full vaccination to attend. Audience members will be asked to show proof of vaccination before entering the theater. Accepted forms for proof of vaccination include a physical vaccine card with your name on it, or on your mobile phone a digital photo of your vaccine card, or the record of your vaccination displayed via the approved state app Docket, or another official vaccine record. If you are feeling unwell, experiencing any COVID-related symptoms, or come into close contact with someone who has COVID-19 up to 14 days before a performance, please stay home.
