Cali Midweek Series: Sacher Lecture "Lift Our Voices, Lifting Ourselves"
It is vital for professional musicians in 2022 to not only aspire for artistic integrity and excellence, but to join communities, collaborate, and offer a hand to others. How can we commit ourselves to all of these and find success? Join us as the brilliantly-inventive composer DOUGLAS GEERS explores human purpose through sound technologies.
DOUGLAS GEERS is a composer who uses technology in nearly all of his works, whether in the compositional process, as part of their sonic realization, or both. He has created concert music, installation works, and several large multimedia theater works. He also performs as an improviser, playing laptop and his own custom electronic instruments. Reviewers have described Geers’ music as "glitchy... keening... scrabbling... contemplative" (New York Times), "kaleidoscopic" (Washington Post), "fascinating . . . virtuosic . . . beautifully eerie" (Montpelier Times-Argus), "Powerful" (Neue Zuericher Zietung), "arresting . . . extraordinarily gratifying" (TheaterScene.net), and have praised its "virtuosic exuberance" (Computer Music Journal) and "shimmering electronic textures" (Village Voice.)
Geers is a Professor of Music at Brooklyn College, a campus of the City University of New York (CUNY), where he is Director of the Center for Computer Music and the MFA program in Sonic Arts. He also serves on the Ph.D. composition faculty of the CUNY Graduate Center. Geers completed his DMA in Music Composition at Columbia University, where he studied with Brad Garton, Tristan Murail, Fred Lerdahl, and Jonathan D. Kramer.
The Sacher Distinguished Lecture in Music is an annual event at the John J. Cali School of Music that features innovative scholarship about music as a cultural form. The lecture takes place in Leshowitz Recital Hall annually and is free and open to the public.
