Lifeguard Training

Course Description

Learn the knowledge and skills needed to prevent aquatic emergencies, including drowning and injuries. The course includes CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid.

Prerequisites

  1. Must be 15 years old at course completion date.
  2. Complete the pretest:
    • Tread water for two minutes without hands.
    • Swim 300 yards continuously.
    • Within one minute and 40 seconds: Swim 20 yards, dive seven feet, retrieve a 10 lb brick, return 20 yards and exit the pool without a ladder.

CPR/AED/First Aid for the Professional Rescuer

Course Description

Teaches those with a duty to act (professional rescuers) the skills they need to respond appropriately to breathing and cardiac emergencies, including the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) to care for a victim of cardiac arrest as well as being certified in first aid and CPR.

Lifeguard Training Review Course

Course Description

The purpose of Lifeguard Training review course is to give individuals with a current Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certification the opportunity to review the course content within a formal course setting and renew their current certification in a shortened amount of time. Requires a current Lifeguarding certification by the American Red Cross. A copy must be provided to the instructor on the first day of the course. This course will cost $150.00.

Lifeguard Instructor Review

Course Description

New to the 2017 Lifeguarding course is the requirement of ALL lifeguard instructors to complete an in-person skill practice session every 2 years to maintain their instructor certification. This program allows instructors to practice, improve and polish skills, as well as be able to recognize correct and incorrect skill performance, and to ensure consistency of Red Cross program skills and knowledge across the instructors and instructor trainers.

Please Note: These courses require you to use a pocket mask. Masks can be purchased for $15.00 at the Student Recreation Center or you can supply your own.

Additional Information

  • Attendance:
    • Attendance is required for all dates and times listed. All courses require proof of age. Please bring government-issued identification to the first class, such as a passport, driver’s license or birth certificate with additional photo ID.
  • Parking Information:
    • All guests of Montclair State University must pay for parking while on campus. Courses have been reduced in cost to reflect this. Patrons can park in Lot 19, directly next to the facility for a cost of $5.00 per day. In order to receive this discount, participants must contact Alex Sperling at least three days prior to the course start date at 973-655-3349 or at sperlinga@montclair.edu. Alternatively, participants can park in the New Jersey Transit Deck on Clove Road, for a cost of $3.00 per day.
  • Cancellation/Refund Policy:
    • No refunds will be given within 10 days of the class starting date. A 75% refund will be given if the cancellation is made more than 10 days before the start date.
    • If a participant fails at the end of the course they will not receive a refund.
