Review the extracted information and confirm that it is accurate and correctly formatted.<\/p>\n<p>A complete profile allows you to present a picture of who you are as a student and professional.\u00a0 A complete profile includes:<\/p>\n<div class=\"callout callout-blue callout-dark\">\n<div class=\"prpl-drawer\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">Name and Headshot<\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\">\n<ul>\n<li>Your name, as well as some academic information, will already be populated for you. Check to make sure everything is correct.<\/li>\n<li>Profiles are 7x more likely to be viewed when there is a photo. Your photo doesn&#8217;t have to be fancy, as long as it&#8217;s current, professional, and simple (no busy background).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">Your Journey<\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\">\n<ul>\n<li>Think of this as your elevator pitch.\u00a0 Use this space showcase your goals, interests, and what motivates you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">Education<\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\">\n<ul>\n<li>Include all relevant education information, such as program of study, degree, expected graduation year, and GPA.\n<ul>\n<li>It is up to you whether or not to hide your GPA.\u00a0 Our recommendation is to display your GPA if it&#8217;s a 3.0 or higher.\u00a0 Note, some employers will require you minimum GPA in order to apply for a position.\u00a0 Hiding your GPA will not exclude you from applying to these positions, as long as you meet the minimum requirement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>If you transferred and\/or attended another university while studying abroad, be sure to include education information for those as well!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">Work Experience<\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\">\n<ul>\n<li>Highlight your work and volunteer work.\u00a0 Do not shy away from listing part-time jobs, volunteer, or seasonal experience.\u00a0 Often these types of positions help you refine your <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/career-services\/are-you-career-ready\/\">career competencies<\/a> and soft skills, such as communication, professionalism, critical thinking, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Organize experiences in reverse chronological order, similar to how you would on a resume.\u00a0 This means your most recent work experience should be listed at the top and your least recent experience at the bottom.<\/li>\n<li>Use strong action verbs, be specific, and quantify experiences whenever possible, and focus on the skills.\u00a0 Don\u2019t forget to use past tense forms of these verbs when discussing actions that you have already completed. Here are a few examples of action verbs:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table style=\"width: 100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>adapt<\/td>\n<td>administer<\/td>\n<td>analyze<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>approve<\/td>\n<td>arrange<\/td>\n<td>compile<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>coordinate<\/td>\n<td>conceive<\/td>\n<td>conduct<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>control<\/td>\n<td>create<\/td>\n<td>develop<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>demonstrate<\/td>\n<td>design<\/td>\n<td>determine<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>direct<\/td>\n<td>earn<\/td>\n<td>edit<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>establish<\/td>\n<td>expand<\/td>\n<td>expedite<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>generate<\/td>\n<td>increase<\/td>\n<td>initiate<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>increase<\/td>\n<td>innovate<\/td>\n<td>improve<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>instruct<\/td>\n<td>maintain<\/td>\n<td>motivate<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>negotiate<\/td>\n<td>originate<\/td>\n<td>promote<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>produce<\/td>\n<td>recognize<\/td>\n<td>reduce<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>revamp<\/td>\n<td>research<\/td>\n<td>revise<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>simplify<\/td>\n<td>solve<\/td>\n<td>support<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">Organizations and Extracurriculars<\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\"><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Include any organizations and extra-curricular activities in which you have been involved, such as student organizations, greek life, clubs, athletic teams, service trips and musical ensembles.\u00a0 Involvement in these activities showcase transferable skills like leadership and collaboration<\/li>\n<li>Remember, employers may not be aware of an organization or its acronym.\u00a0 Be sure to spell out the organization&#8217;s full name and include a description of the organization as well as your specific involvement.\u00a0 For example, use &#8220;Student Government Association&#8221; rather than &#8220;SGA&#8221; in this section of your profile.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">Courses and Projects<\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\">\n<ul>\n<li>If you have little to no work experience, be sure to spend more time completing this section of your profile.<\/li>\n<li>Add courses that align with a particular field of study or industry.\u00a0 Use this section to inform employers of hard skills that you&#8217;ve acquired through your study, such as technical, analytical, project management, presentation, and marketing skills.<\/li>\n<li>Include any projects that showcase your work, including a portfolio,writing samples, websites you created, hackathons, case competitions, publications,presentations or class projects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">Skills<\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\">\n<ul>\n<li>Adding skills to your profile is important and easy to do.\u00a0 Employers can search for candidates by skills. If you make your profile public, employers may contact you if you match a skill they are looking for<\/li>\n<li>Either type in a skill or select some of the suggested skills. Add language skills, technical skills, and any certifications you hold. \u00a0But always be honest; if you do not possess a desired skill yet, then do not list it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">Career Interests<\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\">\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>In this section, indicate if you are currently looking for a job or internship, and list the types you would consider (i.e. part-time, full-time, on-campus). Also, add specific information about location, roles and industries if you are limiting your job search<br \/>\nto certain cities, positions or fields.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Note<\/strong>: If your profile is visible to employers, interests are not listed on your profile, however, employers may use advanced search filters based on Location Interests, Job Role Interests, Job Seeking Interests, and Job Hunt to help them connect with candidates.<\/li>\n<li>Select (or deselect) the check boxes as desired in each section, then click <strong>Save My Career Interests<\/strong> in the lower-right corner of the screen.\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/career-services\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/93\/2022\/05\/handshake-career-interests-1.png\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/career-services\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/93\/2022\/05\/handshake-career-interests-1.png.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Handshake Career Interests Page\"\/><\/figure><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Public vs. Private Profile<\/h3>\n<p>Upon logging into Handshake, you will be prompted to select from one of three privacy options. You can always change your privacy selection by navigating to the Settings &amp; Privacy section of your account.<div class=\"prpl-band-small no-margin\"><div class=\"text-content\"><p><strong>Community:<\/strong> Visible to other students and alumni across all Handshake schools, as well as to employers approved by Montclair State. This option will give you access to Peer Messaging. Any student or alum you see in Handshake with a \u201cMessage\u201d button listed on their profile has indicated that they are open to connecting.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Employers:<\/strong> This option will make you visible to employers approved by Montclair State. You will not have access to Peer Messaging. Employers are performing over 25,000 searches for candidates like you every month!\u00a0 You&#8217;ll need to set your profile to &#8220;employers&#8221; or &#8220;community&#8221; in order for your profile to appear in these searches.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Private:<\/strong> Your profile will not be visible to other students, alumni, or employers. You still have access to Handshake jobs, internships and other resources.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<h3>How Complete is Complete?<\/h3>\n<p>Handshake provides a &#8220;level of profile completion&#8221; with a colored progress bar. As you add content to your profile, your profile completion will progress and the color of the bar will change, starting from red.<\/p>\n<p>But don&#8217;t be discouraged if your profile progress bar isn&#8217;t full. Even after adding the above content \u2013 one work experience, an organization or activity, and one skill, the bar will not say your profile is complete.\u00a0 Be sure to continue to update your profile as you gain more experience and as your career goals evolve!<\/p>\n<p>Login to Handshake and get started on your profile.
