{"id":119197,"date":"2019-02-06T16:14:36","date_gmt":"2019-02-06T21:14:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/career-services\/?p=119197"},"modified":"2019-02-06T16:33:37","modified_gmt":"2019-02-06T21:33:37","slug":"job-outlook-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/career-services\/2019\/02\/06\/job-outlook-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"Job Outlook 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Best Initial Hiring Outlook Since the Class of 2007<\/h2>\n<p>Good News for 2019 graduates!\u00a0 According to the National Association for Colleges and Employers&#8217; <em>2019<\/em> <em>Job Outlook<\/em> survey, U.S. college hiring is expected to increase by almost 17 percent.\u00a0 Employers with plans to increase their new college hiring cited early talent\/succession planning among the reasons for the increase.\u00a0 Many of the respondents in this group also reported that they plan to concentrate on converting more interns to full-time hires.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, 50 percent of employers from the Mideast region are expecting to increase their college hiring and 35.7 percent are expecting to maintain their college hiring.\u00a0 The Mideast has an overall,\u00a0projected increase in the number of college hires reported in the double-digits at just about 18 percent.<\/p>\n<h2>Resume Tips to Help You Stand Out!<\/h2>\n<p>For many employers, a well-written resume is what catches their attention.\u00a0 In fact, 80% of the <em>2019 Job Outlook <\/em>survey respondents seek proof of strong written communication skills through a candidate&#8217;s resume.\u00a0 In addition to <strong>strong written communication skills<\/strong>, employers are also rely on the resume to demonstrate a candidate&#8217;s <strong>problem-solving<\/strong> <strong>skills <\/strong>and <strong>ability to work in a team<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to choosing between two (or more) equally qualified candidates, employers looks for attributes on a candidate&#8217;s resume that influence their decision.\u00a0 At the top of the list, employers rank <strong>having completed an<\/strong> <strong>internship<\/strong> as being the most influential attribute when selecting one candidate over another.\u00a0 In order of most influential to least, employers also noted that they look for the following attributes on a candidate&#8217;s resume:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Has completed an internship within organization<\/li>\n<li>Has internship experience within industry<\/li>\n<li>Major<\/li>\n<li>Has held a leadership position<\/li>\n<li>Has general work experience<\/li>\n<li>Has been involved in extracurricular activities (clubs, sports, student government, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>High GPA (3.0 or above)<\/li>\n<li>School attended<\/li>\n<li>Has done volunteer work<\/li>\n<li>Is fluent in a foreign language<\/li>\n<li>Has studied abroad<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Take Action<\/h2>\n<p>With college hiring increasing in 2019, it&#8217;s important for graduating students to be engaged with the Career Services offices in their college\/school.\u00a0 At Montclair State University, each college\/school has its own designated career services office, designed to connect you with career and internship opportunities in your field of study!\u00a0 There are many ways to connect with career services!\u00a0 Here are a few that we recommend:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/career-services\/current-students\/career-counseling\/\"><strong>Meet with a career counselor<\/strong><\/a><strong>:<\/strong> you may not know where to look or how to start your job or internship search.\u00a0 From freshman year to graduation, the career counselors in your college\/school are there to support you at all stages of your career development.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/career-services\/current-students\/my-hire-a-red-hawk-account\/\">Upload your resume on <\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/career-services\/current-students\/my-hire-a-red-hawk-account\/\">Hire a Red Hawk<\/a>:<\/em> <\/strong>When you upload your resume, it is automatically routed to your career services office for review and feedback.\u00a0 As you can see from the <em>2019 Job Outlook Survey<\/em>, it&#8217;s important to have a competitive, well-written resume to making a lasting, first impression on hiring employers.\u00a0 Take advantage of this free resource as you begin your job and internship search!<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/career-services\/2019\/01\/24\/spring-2019-career-and-internship-fairs\/\"><strong>Attend the Spring 2019 Career and Internship Fairs<\/strong><\/a>: Career Services will be hosting industry-specific career and internship fairs throughout the spring semester.
