{"id":121321,"date":"2020-10-05T15:06:45","date_gmt":"2020-10-05T19:06:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/cchl\/?p=121321"},"modified":"2020-10-05T15:06:45","modified_gmt":"2020-10-05T19:06:45","slug":"formation-of-disability-caucus-at-montclair-state-university","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/cchl\/2020\/10\/05\/formation-of-disability-caucus-at-montclair-state-university\/","title":{"rendered":"Formation of Disability Caucus at Montclair State University"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We are pleased to announce the formation of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/disability-caucus\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/disability-caucus\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1601733946891000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEW5GqbX_q2ugloEZxv83RKq4-LQg\">Disability\u00a0Caucus<\/a>\u00a0at MSU.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Disability\u00a0Caucus\u00a0serves as a forum for discussion and advocacy regarding issues important to\u00a0disabled\u00a0community members at MSU, as well as working to support and enhance the inclusivity, accessibility, and cultural responsiveness of the university community.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0Caucus\u00a0also works to support the efforts of the\u00a0Disability\u00a0Rights, Education, Activism, and Mentoring (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MsuDream\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/twitter.com\/MsuDream&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1601733946891000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHge1svbhFTFSSDizdCmEo2jKLBGQ\">DREAM<\/a>) Student Chapter here at MSU.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The\u00a0Disability\u00a0Caucus\u00a0invites all faculty and staff who identify as\u00a0Disabled\u00a0(or Neurodivergent, or Mad, or Deaf, or otherwise ability non-conforming) as well as non-disabled\u00a0allies to learn more about and join the\u00a0Disability\u00a0Caucus.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/~brodericka\">Dr. Alicia Broderick<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/~lalvanip\">Dr. Priya Lalvani<\/a>, both Professors in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/teaching-and-learning\">Teaching and Learning Department<\/a>, are the president and vice president, respectively. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/~gerbere\">Dr. Elaine Gerber<\/a>, Associate Professor in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/anthropology\">Anthropology<\/a>, is the corresponding secretary.<\/p>\n<p>Their work is necessary because disability remains a devalued experienced and stigmatized identity category. Within institutions of higher education, people with disabilities are underrepresented in staff and faculty positions. Disabled students, faculty, and staff often find themselves marginalized and experience discrimination. The caucus recognizes that much of this marginalization and discrimination is the result of negative attitudes in society as well as systematic and structural inequality, rather than the result of individual impairments <em>per se<\/em>.
