He was\u00a0fully vaccinated but also had multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer, the family said. New Jersey Gov.\u00a0Phil Murphy\u00a0said at\u00a0his Monday coronavirus briefing\u00a0that\u00a0Powell\u2019s death\u00a0is putting a \u201cbright spotlight on\u00a0breakthrough infections\u00a0and deaths.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Stephanie Silvera, Professor in the Public Health Department, said the Powell case is an example of why \u201cit is so important for all of us to do everything we can to reduce transmission and keep community rates low so that we can protect the most vulnerable around us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"InContent_Center_Background\">\n<div class=\"InContent_Center_Padding\">\n<div id=\"InContent_Center_WHBRK35WMBCBRGNWVII3OTNV5I\" class=\"ad-observer\">\u201cThis means for those of us who are eligible, we should get vaccinated and we should be wearing masks indoors when in large groups, particularly if we don\u2019t know the vaccine status and risk reduction behaviors of everyone else,\u201d she added.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"InContent_Center_Background\">\n<div class=\"InContent_Center_Padding\">\n<div><\/div>\n<div id=\"InContent_Center_74ILCO6GGRGDDKLOORLV7A57P4\" class=\"ad-observer\">Dr. Silvera said the data makes it clear that vaccines reduce the risk of death, hospitalization and the possibility someone could suffer so-called long-haul COVID symptoms.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"InContent_Center_Background\">\n<div class=\"InContent_Center_Padding\">\n<div><\/div>\n<div id=\"InContent_Center_26E2VA2R3RFWHBYE7XZ5Q72T7U\" class=\"ad-observer\">She called breakthrough cases \u201ca convenient reason\u201d for those who say \u201cWhy bother getting vaccinated if I can get infected anyway?\u201d to justify not getting the vaccine. She said the vaccines were not designed to prevent transmission \u2014 though she said they have been shown to significantly reduce the risk of transmission \u2014 but rather to prevent severe illness and death.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"F62WTZBNYRGSJKDZ5A3DPTTLOM\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\">\u201cEven with that, like most things in life, we are not talking about risk elimination. We are talking about risk reduction,\u201d Dr. Silvera said. \u201cYes, there will be a small number of people who will still become infected and an even smaller number who will develop severe illness and some who will die, but those numbers are much, much smaller than they are among the unvaccinated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"AMY2LUYOWRE57JQURO2QQ474AU\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\">\u201cParachutes have fail rates too, but I wouldn\u2019t recommend jumping out of a plane without one because they aren\u2019t effective 100% of the time,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<span class=\"prpl-button\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/coronavirus\/2021\/10\/colin-powells-death-puts-spotlight-on-breakthrough-cases-nj-data-shows-they-are-rare.html\">Read the full, original story at NJ.com<\/a><\/span>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Colin Powell&#8217;s death puts spotlight on breakthrough cases.
