{"id":127470,"date":"2024-05-20T10:37:00","date_gmt":"2024-05-20T14:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/ceel\/?p=127470"},"modified":"2024-05-20T10:37:00","modified_gmt":"2024-05-20T14:37:00","slug":"ten-presents-at-national-forum-for-educational-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/ceel\/2024\/05\/20\/ten-presents-at-national-forum-for-educational-research\/","title":{"rendered":"TEN Presents at National Forum for Educational Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Imagine an annual gathering where educators from around the globe converge to discuss groundbreaking research, exchange ideas, and unveil the latest innovations in education. That&#8217;s the essence of the American Education Research Association (AERA) conference, where this spring, Montclair State University\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/ceel\/research-and-innovation\/transformative-education-network-ten\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Transformative Education Network<\/a> \u2013  known by its acronym TEN and nationally recognized for developing antiracist and social justice educators \u2013 shared the spotlight among the prestigious gathering in Philadelphia.<\/p>\n<p>With the theme of the AERA conference \u201cDismantling Racial Injustice and Constructing Educational Possibilities: A Call to Action,\u201d Teaching and Learning professors and TEN co-directors Bree Picower and Tanya Maloney were invited to present a panel on how they bring antiracism and social justice explicitly into curriculum and professional development when recruiting and preparing prospective teachers with partner districts.<\/p>\n<p>Also participating were Montclair students from the University\u2019s College of Education and Engaged Learning, several who joined the professors in the presentation on the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/ceel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/271\/2022\/04\/TEN-NEWSLETTER-Vol.-1-No.-4-April-2022.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\">four domains of TEN<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAttending an educational research conference can sound intimidating, but I quickly realized how welcoming and supportive everyone was,\u201d said Anthony Gachetti, a secondary Environmental Science pre-service educator. \u201cAs a certified science nerd, I was overjoyed to meet other science educators who were also passionate about anti-racism and inclusion.\u201d <\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_127472\" class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/ceel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/271\/2024\/05\/ten2.jpeg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/ceel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/271\/2024\/05\/ten2.jpeg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Montclair students present at AERA conference\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Montclair students presenting at the American Education Research Association conference, are Montclair students from left, Shanika Forbes, Anthony Gachetti, Jodie Buri and Valerie Chica.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Valerie Chica, a bilingual elementary pre-service educator, attended sessions centered on equitable access, culturally responsive teaching and engaging multilingual learners with technology. \u201cAfter the sessions ended, I introduced myself and was able to network with the other educators in the room. It was amazing to hear their work, insight and knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jodie Buri, a secondary Math pre-service educator, felt empowered by the aura of inclusivity. &#8220;At times, addressing educational injustices can make [a person of color] feel like the odd one out. However, during AERA, I found myself surrounded by like-minded individuals,\u201d she said. \u201cI felt optimistic, particularly when I listened to Latinx researchers sharing strategies for addressing the challenges faced by our community in accessing STEM fields.
