A new assistant professor in the Department of Nutrition and Food Studies, Mousumi Bose, who received her Ph.D. from Rutgers and was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the New York Obesity and Nutrition Research Center (NYONRC) at Columbia University, has recently been awarded a training grant from the Sterol and Isoprenoid Research (STAIR) Consortium of the Rare Diseases Clinical Research Network. The STAIR Consortium is supported by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the National Center for the Advancement of Translational Sciences at NIH. The goals of the STAIR Training Program are to encourage the growth of independent researchers in rare diseases, through  1) facilitating a comprehensive understanding of sterol and isoprenoid diseases, a group of rare metabolic disorders, 2) familiarizing trainees with research study design, IRB administrative requirements, subject recruitment and implementation of a research study and 3) helping trainees acquire a skill set for writing scientific papers and developing research ideas for grant applications. Dr. Bose herself is the mother of a child with a rare metabolic disease, and she is excited for the opportunity to receive training in a research field that she is so passionate about.
