Dr. Stephanie Silvera, Professor in the Public Health Department, explained sleuth-like practices in relation to the Coronavirus, or COVID-19. Silvera noted that health officials use a tactic known as “contact tracing” to identify possible exposure. Silvera noted: “They will ask where have you been, who have you interacted with, the nature of the activity, basically trying to identify anyone from family, friends, coworkers, any health care providers, to create a contact list.” She added: ” They will try to find every single person and have them listed to inform them that someone they have been in touch with has tested positive and give them information on what that means.” This could mean self-quarantine or reducing social contact.

Other areas of Dr. Silvera’s research include cancer epidemiology with a focus on racial and ethnic disparities in cancer outcomes as well as dietary risk factors.
