{"id":15358,"date":"2015-10-23T10:44:45","date_gmt":"2015-10-23T14:44:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/news\/article.php?ArticleID=15358"},"modified":"2019-07-11T10:34:34","modified_gmt":"2019-07-11T14:34:34","slug":"15358_alumni-matthew-perkins-receives-superintendent-s-new-teacher-award-in-orange-nj","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/cehs\/2015\/10\/23\/15358_alumni-matthew-perkins-receives-superintendent-s-new-teacher-award-in-orange-nj\/","title":{"rendered":"Alumni Matthew Perkins Receives Superintendent&#8217;s New Teacher Award in Orange, NJ"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p>The Newark Montclair Urban Teacher Residency (NMUTR) is proud to recognize Cohort 4\/June 2013 graduate Matthew Perkins.\u00a0 Matt recently started his second year of teaching as an Algebra teacher at Orange High School in the public schools of Orange, New Jersey.\u00a0 On the first day of school in Orange it is the tradition that all district staff start the day by attending the \u201cSuperintendent\u2019s Convocation.\u201d\u00a0 During this gathering, on Tuesday, September 8<sup>th<\/sup>, 2015, district Superintendent Ronald Lee awarded a small number of faculty and staff the \u201cSuperintendent\u2019s Recognition Award.\u201d\u00a0 Matt Perkins was one of the recipients of this distinguished recognition.<\/p>\n<p>Matt embodies the <em>promise<\/em> of the Newark Montclair Urban Teacher Residency (NMUTR) to bring high quality, transformational STEM teachers to the schools and classrooms of New Jersey\u2019s high need districts.\u00a0 In his first year of teaching in the Orange Public Schools, during the 2014-2015 school year, Matt was consistently recognized by district and school administrators for creating an Algebra classroom that stimulated and encouraged student engagement through inquiry and authentic learning scenarios that related to the lives of his students.\u00a0 Matt\u2019s dynamic instructional practice led to increased student achievement which earned Matt the final evaluation rating of \u201cHighly Effective.\u201d\u00a0 It should be noted that it is unusual for a teacher to attain this top level of rating during their first year in the classroom.\u00a0 Matt is quick to state that\u2026\u201dI wouldn\u2019t be the teacher I am without this (NMUTR) program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matt came to the NMUTR directly following his May 2013 undergraduate graduation from Montclair State University as a major in Mathematics with a minor in Sociology.\u00a0 He heard about the NMUTR\u2019s innovative teacher preparation program when he attended a Graduate School Info session during his senior year.\u00a0 During the admissions process Matt shared that he wanted to be in the NMUTR because it would draw on his two passions:\u00a0 mathematics and his interest in working in an urban setting.\u00a0 Matt comes from a large, close-knit family where he was always encouraged to pursue activities that developed his interests and simultaneously served others.\u00a0 A prominent illustration of this is Matt\u2019s attainment of the rank, \u201cEagle Scout\u201d during his senior year of high school.\u00a0 Additionally, Matt has been active on \u201cExtreme Frisbee\u201d sports teams since middle school;
