Each year, a faculty advisory committee selects a book to be read by all incoming first-year students before they arrive. The program began in 2011. The goals for this new program are to\u2014<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide a common intellectual experience<\/li>\n<li>Engage in interdisciplinary dialogue and debate<\/li>\n<li>Build community around a shared understanding of relevant issues<\/li>\n<li>Celebrate the written word<\/li>\n<li>Offer opportunities for students to reflect on their roles as readers and learners<\/li>\n<li>Encourage campuswide engagement with the book\u2019s theme<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong><a name=\"whichbook\"><\/a>Which book was chosen?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For our 2013 selection, the faculty advisory committee chose <em>The Devil&#8217;s Highway<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><a name=\"where\"><\/a>Where do I get the book?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The book is available in the <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bkstr.com\/webapp\/wcs\/stores\/servlet\/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10001&amp;categoryId=4294918123&amp;langId=-1&amp;productId=60631399&amp;storeId=10415&amp;productStoreId=10415\" target=\"_blank\">Montclair State bookstore<\/a> beginning in April.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><a name=\"when\"><\/a>When should I read it?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Your first assignment for college is to read the book this summer, before you come to campus for the fall semester. Begin early, and pace yourself.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><a name=\"how\"><\/a>How will I use this book?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Several ways. The committee currently includes the following members:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Alison Beringer, Assistant Professor of Classics and General Humanities<\/li>\n<li>Yasemin Besen-Cassino, Associate Professor of Sociology<\/li>\n<li>Raul Galoppe, Associate Professor of Spanish and Italian and Program Coordinator of GLBTQ Studies<\/li>\n<li>Dean Hamden, Assistant Professor of Mathematical Sciences<\/li>\n<li>Judith Lin Hunt, Dean of Library Services<\/li>\n<li>Mark Kay, Associate Professor of Marketing<\/li>\n<li>Melinda Knight, Professor of English and Director of the Center for Writing Excellence<\/li>\n<li>Christine Lemesianou, Associate Professor, Communication Studies<\/li>\n<li>Kirk McDermid, Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Religion<\/li>\n<li>Alicia Remolde, Assistant Director of the Center for Writing Excellence<\/li>\n<li>Jessica Restaino, Associate Professor of of English and Director of First-Year Writing<\/li>\n<li>Nicole Weir, Assistant Director of the Center for Advising and Student Transitions<\/li>\n<li>Leslie Wilson, Professor of History<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Committee members engaged in their own reading program and reviewed some twenty titles.  After meeting throughout the fall and deciding on four finalists, the committee selected <em>The Devil&#8217;s Highway<\/em>.  The committee believes the book is an inspired choice because, like the 2012 book (<em>The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks<\/em>), this 2013 book will reinforce Montclair State\u2019s global learning objectives, provide opportunities for students to learn about other cultures and explore differences, give faculty ways to approach a particular text from multiple disciplinary perspectives, and enhance our reputation for innovation.<br \/>\nIn making a selection, the committee relied on the following criteria:<br \/>\nThe book should:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>be nonfiction and fairly recent<\/li>\n<li>be well-written and readable<\/li>\n<li>engage first-year students and introduce them to college-level processes of inquiry<\/li>\n<li>have the potential for building community through a common reading experience<\/li>\n<li>be teachable in a variety of settings<\/li>\n<li>foster intellectual growth and reflection<\/li>\n<li>lend itself to campuswide events and activities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong><a name=\"fac-where\"><\/a>Where do students, faculty, and staff get the book?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The book will be available to students in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bkstr.com\/webapp\/wcs\/stores\/servlet\/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10001&amp;categoryId=4294918123&amp;langId=-1&amp;productId=60631399&amp;storeId=10415&amp;productStoreId=10415\">Montclair State bookstore<\/a> beginning in April.
