Each year, a faculty advisory committee selects a book to be read by all incoming first-year students before they arrive. The program began in 2011. The goals for this new program are to\u2014<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide a common intellectual experience<\/li>\n<li>Engage in interdisciplinary dialogue and debate<\/li>\n<li>Build community around a shared understanding of relevant issues<\/li>\n<li>Celebrate the written word<\/li>\n<li>Offer opportunities for students to reflect on their roles as readers and learners<\/li>\n<li>Encourage campuswide engagement with the book\u2019s theme<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong><a name=\"whichbook\"><\/a>Which book was chosen?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For our 2012 selection, the faculty advisory committee chose The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Here is an<br \/>\nexcerpt from the book:<\/p>\n<p><em>There\u2019s a photo on my wall of a woman I\u2019ve never met, its left corner torn and patched together with tape. She looks straight into the camera and smiles, hands on hips, dress suit neatly pressed, lips painted deep red. It\u2019s the late 1940s and she hasn\u2019t yet reached the age of thirty. Her light brown skin is smooth, her eyes still young and playful, oblivious to the tumor growing inside her\u2014a tumor that would leave her five children motherless and change the future of medicine. Beneath the photo, a caption says her name is \u201cHenrietta Lacks, Helen Lane or Helen Larson.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>No one knows who took that picture, but it\u2019s appeared hundreds of times in magazines and science textbooks, on blogs and laboratory walls. She\u2019s usually identified as Helen Lane, but often she has no name at all. She\u2019s simply called HeLa, the code name given to the world\u2019s first immortal human cells\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p>More information about the book can be found on the author\u2019s website: <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/rebeccaskloot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rebecca Skloot<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong><a name=\"fac-who\"><\/a>Who selected the book and how was it selected?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Dean Morrissey of CHSS formed the Montclair Book Faculty Advisory Committee, which included the following members:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Yasemin Besen-Cassino, Associate Professor of Sociology<\/li>\n<li>Alan Cottrell, Associate Dean<\/li>\n<li>Raul Galoppe, Associate Professor of Spanish and Italian and Program Coordinator of GLBTQ Studies<\/li>\n<li>Emily Isaacs, Associate Professor of English and Director of First-Year Writing<\/li>\n<li>Judith Lin Hunt, Dean of Library Services<\/li>\n<li>Rita Jacobs, Professor of English<\/li>\n<li>Melinda Knight, Professor of English and Director of the Center for Writing Excellence<\/li>\n<li>Christine Lemesianou, Associate Professor, Communication Studies<\/li>\n<li>Kirk McDermid, Assistant Professor of Philosophy &amp; Religion<\/li>\n<li>Dana Wilber, Associate Professor, Early Childhood, Elementary Education, and Literacy Education<\/li>\n<li>Leslie Wilson, Professor of History<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Committee members engaged in their own reading program and reviewed some twenty titles.\u00a0 After meeting throughout the fall and deciding on four finalists, the committee selected\u00a0<em>The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks<\/em>.\u00a0 The committee believes the book is an inspired choice because, like the 2011 book (<em>The Geography of Bliss<\/em>), this 2012 book will reinforce Montclair State\u2019s global learning objectives, provide opportunities for students to learn about other cultures and explore differences, give faculty ways to approach a particular text from multiple disciplinary perspectives, and enhance our reputation for innovation.<br \/>\nIn making a selection, the committee relied on the following criteria:<\/p>\n<p>The book should&#8211;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>be nonfiction and fairly recent<\/li>\n<li>be well-written and readable<\/li>\n<li>engage first-year students and introduce them to college-level processes of inquiry<\/li>\n<li>have the potential for building community through a common reading experience<\/li>\n<li>be teachable in a variety of settings<\/li>\n<li>foster intellectual growth and reflection<\/li>\n<li>lend itself to campuswide events and activities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong><a name=\"fac-where\"><\/a>Where do students, faculty, and staff get the book?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The book will be available to students in the\u00a0<a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bkstr.com\/montclairstatestore\/home\" target=\"_blank\">Montclair State bookstore<\/a>\u00a0beginning in April.\u00a0 For faculty and staff, the university will provide desk copies.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><a name=\"fac-when\"><\/a>When should students read it?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Students should read the book during the summer, before they come to campus for the fall semester, and they will be prompted to do so through several pre-matriculation events and activities.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><a name=\"fac-how\"><\/a>How will the book be used?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Several ways.
