Academic Advising

The goal of academic advising is to help students create an academic plan towards graduation. It allows students to become aware of what the general education requirements are, what requirements they need to meet in order to complete their specific degree program, as well as aides in solving any academic problems students may encounter during their time as a student at Montclair State University.

Montclair State University assigns an advisor to every student. Those students with undeclared majors are assigned an advisor through the Center for Advising and Student Transitions. Those students who have declared a major in one of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences departments will be assigned one through their department.  Although you are not required to meet with your advisor prior to the start of each semester, it is strongly recommended that you meet with him or her prior to every semester to stay on track.

MANDATORY FRESHMEN ADVISING: Full-time first year/freshmen students at Montclair State University are required to meet with their advisor prior to registering for courses for the Spring semester of their freshman year AND prior to registering for courses for their Fall semester of their sophomore year. A hold will be placed on your account and will prevent you from registering for courses until you meet with your advisor and the hold is removed.lp
