Media Coverage of the Success of Emma Dante's Work at MSU

The U.S. premiere of Le sorelle Macaluso (The Sisters Macaluso), directed by Emma Dante and performed by the Compagnia Sud Costa Occidentale (Nov. 16-19, 2017), along with the conversation with Emma Dante herself, titled "Sicily as a Theater of the World" (Nov. 15), was met with great interest by the general public and the critics.

Brought to Montclair State University by Arts and Cultural Programming in collaboration with the Inserra Chair and the Italian Program (Modern Languages and Literatures) within a Peak Performances season devoted to women innovators, the project has received widespread and positive media coverage, including high praise from the New York Times which selected the play as a Critic's Pick. The project has entailed a range of academic components including the incorporation of the events into the syllabi of various classes and, most notably, the production of the English surtitles for the play. Initially created for the play's presentation at the prestigious Piccolo Teatro di Milano for the Expo 2015 calendar by MSU student Marta Russoniello supervised by two professors in the Italian Program (Dr. Trubiano and Dr. Fiore), The Sisters Macaluso have come back to our campus in what could be called an ideal virtuous circle. The surtitles were specifically addressed in articles by the Montclair Local and Culturezohn.
