Outside the larger academic departments in CHSS are the programs. These programs work in conjunction with the major programs offered by the College, offering minors and in one case, a major that can easily complement many other CHSS majors. The academic programs of CHSS offer students opportunities to learn about issues that affect today’s world while building academic programs to suit their interests and needs.<\/p>\n
A CHSS education\u00a0gives students access to varied paths, both professionally and academically. English<\/a> majors have become teachers, editors, admissions counselors \u2014 even gone to work at MTV. Psychology Department<\/a> graduates are working as nurses, social workers, speech therapists \u2014 and in marketing and the New York State Supreme Court. Naturally, some Political Science<\/a> and History <\/a>majors go on to law school \u2014 while others have gone into laboratory work or marketing.<\/p>\n As a Montclair State undergraduate, you must choose a major by the end of your sophomore year. Each major is hosted by one (or two, in the case of some double-majors) of the University\u2019s colleges, where most of your coursework will take place.<\/p>\n Undergraduates can choose from more than 20 majors, nearly 50 minors, and numerous areas of graduate study and professional certificate programs<\/a>. Interdisciplinary programs such as Medical Humanities<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies<\/a>\u00a0include classes in several departments; some, like Film Studies<\/a>, also include classes in other colleges.<\/p>\n Concentrations within each major add even more depth to the CHSS experience. The student who majors in Justice Studies<\/a>, for example, can choose a concentration in International Justice<\/a>, Justice Systems<\/a>, or Paralegal Studies<\/a>.
