{"id":206702,"date":"2019-06-24T12:28:13","date_gmt":"2019-06-24T16:28:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/chss\/?p=206702"},"modified":"2022-02-15T11:38:09","modified_gmt":"2022-02-15T16:38:09","slug":"dr-fiores-book-pre-occupied-spaces-new-prize-invited-lectures-and-reviews","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/chss\/2019\/06\/24\/dr-fiores-book-pre-occupied-spaces-new-prize-invited-lectures-and-reviews\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Fiore\u2019s book Pre-Occupied Spaces: New Prize, Invited Lectures and Reviews"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In May 2019 <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fordhampress.com\/9780823274321\/pre-occupied-spaces\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Pre-Occupied Spaces: Remapping Italy\u2019s Transnational Migrations and Colonial Legacies <\/em><\/a>was assigned the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/inserra-chair\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2019\/06\/Edinburgh-Gadda-Prize-EGP-2019-Full-Lists-and-Final-Results.pdf\">Runner Up Gadda Prize<\/a> which is granted by the University of Edinburgh. Fiore\u2019s book was selected among 93 monographs in the Established Scholars category. The Award Ceremony will take place at the Scottish Parliament on Wednesday 26 June, 6-8pm.<\/p>\n<p>The book had previously been awarded the <a href=\"https:\/\/aais.wildapricot.org\/book_prize\">2017 AAIS\/American Association of Italian Studies Book Prize<\/a> in the 20th-21st centuries category, received an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mla.org\/Resources\/Career\/MLA-Grants-and-Awards\/Winners-of-MLA-Prizes\/Biennial-Prize-and-Award-Winners\/Howard-R.-Marraro-Prize-Winners\">Honorable Mention at the 2018 MLA Marraro Prize in Comparative Literature involving Italian<\/a>, and was nominated for the 2018 Bridge Book Award.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Fiore\u2019s award-winning book also continues to be part of and to foster rich discussions about migration on different campuses, while it is still reviewed in journals around the world (Italy, Brazil, England) two years after its publication.<\/p>\n<p>The book was at the center of a diverse series of commitments at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/inserra-chair\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2019\/01\/FIORE-poster-OSU-scholar-in-residence.pdf\">The Ohio State University of Columbus<\/a> when Dr. Fiore was invited as scholar in residence. As part of the Migration, Mobility, and Immobility Project of the Global Arts and Discovery Theme she gave a public lecture on \u201cItaly in the Transnational Space of Migration and Colonial Routes,\u201d visited two classes, introduced a film screening of <em>Nuovomondo<\/em> (The Golden Door, Crialese, 2006) with the Global Mediterranean Working Group, attended a meeting with graduate students, conducted a workshop with the Migration Studies Working Group on \u201cTransnational Cities: Reading Spaces as Texts of Mobility,\u201d and met with members of the Italian American community of Columbus.<\/p>\n<p>In April 2019 she was invited to <a href=\"http:\/\/humanitiescenter.miamioh.edu\/event\/pre-occupied-spaces-remapping-italys-transnational-migrations-and-colonial-legacies\">Miami University at Oxford, Ohio<\/a> where she gave a lecture as part of the L. P. Irvin lecture series. Additionally, she gave an in-class talk about recent immigration from Italy to the U.S.<\/p>\n<p><em>Pre-Occupied Spaces<\/em> was also presented in the <a href=\"http:\/\/adultschool.org\/\">NJ<\/a>\u2013<a href=\"https:\/\/calandrainstitute.org\/events\/pre-occupied-spaces-remapping-italys-transnational-migrations-and-colonial-legacies\/\">NY<\/a> area in May: <a href=\"https:\/\/calandrainstitute.org\/events\/pre-occupied-spaces-remapping-italys-transnational-migrations-and-colonial-legacies\/\">Calandra Institute<\/a> as part of their scholarly series and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adultschool.org\/index.cfm?method=ClassInfo.ClassInformation&amp;int_class_id=45664&amp;int_category_id=22&amp;int_sub_category_id=109&amp;int_catalog_id=0\">Montclair Public Library<\/a> as part of their Adult Classes.<\/p>\n<p>The book is still reviewed by scholars active in different disciplines.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ingentaconnect.com\/contentone\/intellect\/cjmc\/2019\/00000010\/00000001\/art00013;jsessionid=4p82rn730nitf.x-ic-live-02\" target=\"_blank\">Review<\/a> by Loredana Polezzi (Translation Studies, Comparative Literature) in <em>Crossings: Journal of Migration &amp; Culture <\/em>(April 2019)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/networks.h-net.org\/node\/7651\/reviews\/3788296\/viscomi-fiore-pre-occupied-spaces-remapping-italys-transnational\">Review <\/a>by Joseph Viscomi (Modern European History) in <em>H-net Reviews in the Humanities and Social Sciences <\/em>(Feb. 2019)<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1080\/1354571X.2019.1550882\" target=\"_blank\">Review<\/a> by David Aliano (Italian Transnational and Comparative Studies, History) in <em>Journal of Modern Italian Studies <\/em>(Feb. 2019)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/inserra-chair\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2019\/05\/Fiore_Italian-American-Review_REV.pdf\">Review <\/a>by Caterina Romeo (Literary Criticism and Theory, Gender Studies) in <em>Italian American Review <\/em>(Winter 2019)<\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/inserra-chair\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2019\/03\/Mattei-Review-Fiore-PS-Book-Oblio.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Review<\/a> by Alessandra Mattei (Statistics) in <em>Oblio: Osservatorio bibliografico della letteratura italiana otto-novecentesca <\/em>(Winter 2018)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Increasingly so, the book is also the occasion for commissioned publications in peer-reviewed journals as well as interviews in the media, such as by <a href=\"https:\/\/wetheitalians.com\/single_post\/new-italian-emigration-us-meet-teresa-fiore\">We The Italians<\/a> (May 12, 2019) and <a href=\"https:\/\/qds.it\/teresa-fiore-la-ricerca-non-e-solo-scienza-piu-fondi-per-progetti-interdisciplinari\/?refresh_ce\">Quotidiano di Sicilia <\/a>(June 1, 2019). <\/p>\n<p>By linking Italy\u2019s long history of emigration to all continents in the world, Fiore rethinks Italy\u2019s formation and development on a transnational map including Egypt, Argentina, France, Ethiopia and the U.S. through the cultural analysis of travel, living, and workspaces as depicted in literary, filmic, and musical texts.
