Montclair State University extends a warm welcome to four National Endowment for the Humanities postdoctoral scholars who will be spending 2022 teaching and researching in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences:\u00a0Dalia Davoudi<\/strong>,\u00a0Ryan Purcell<\/strong>,\u00a0Michael Reinhard<\/strong>, and\u00a0Keishla Rivera-Lopez<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The scholars are part of a year-long initiative designed to reimagine humanities programming with today\u2019s world \u2014 and the social and political issues that have moved to the forefront amidst a global pandemic \u2014 at the heart of the coursework.<\/p>\n

Dalia Davoudi<\/a>\u00a0(Ph.D., English, Indiana University) has recently published work on the writer Elizabeth Stoddard in\u00a0Legacy: A Journal of American Women Writers<\/em>\u00a0and on the roots of contemporary Afrofuturism in\u00a0Radical Teacher<\/em>. As an NEH scholar, she is interested in developing new critical mediums to represent the nineteenth century, with a focus on film essays. Her book in progress,\u00a0Deviant: Feminist Movements at the Margins<\/em>, places nineteenth-century literature conversation with contemporary debates about feminist aesthetics, politics, and epistemologies.<\/p>\n

Ryan Purcell\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0(Ph.D., History, Cornell University) work on history and popular culture has been published in the\u00a0Journal of Urban History<\/em>,\u00a0Rethinking History<\/em>,\u00a0Los Angeles Review of Books<\/em>, and\u00a0Hyperallergic<\/em>. A member of the editorial board at the Gotham Center for New York City History at the City University of New York Graduate Center, he is working on a book about the formation of the punk and hip-hop movements in New York during the \u201860s and \u201870s.<\/p>\n

Michael Reinhard<\/a>\u00a0(Ph.D., Film, UCLA) has published essays in\u00a0Velvet Light Trap<\/em>,\u00a0Feminist Media Studies<\/em>, and\u00a0Intersectional Feminist Readings of Comics<\/em>\u00a0(Routledge, 2021). Currently, Reinhard is writing a monograph,\u00a0The Diva\u2019s Public: Celebrity, Media Activism, and the New Cultural Citizenship<\/em>, which traces the history of the diva and the operatic female voice as a commodity or celebrity brand that helped to frame new forms of media as synonymous with technological and cultural progress.<\/p>\n

Keishla Rivera-Lopez<\/a>\u00a0(Ph.D., American Studies, Rutgers University) is a writer, poet, and scholar. Her work-in-progress,\u00a0Boricua Projects<\/em>, takes a century-long look at how Puerto Rican women writers conceptualize freedom and independence in reference to their bodies and to the environments they occupy. Her dissertation won a Dean\u2019s Dissertation Award at Rutgers, and was cited for special recognition by the Puerto Rican Studies Association and the Ford Foundation.<\/p>\n

While at Montclair State, the postdoctoral scholars will be collaborating in a faculty seminar alongside nine current Montclair State faculty from various CHSS departments to renovate the curriculum in ways that can help students connect the passion they feel for issues of racial, social, and environmental justice to the intellectual development that only a university education can foster. The postdoctoral positions and seminar are funded by a $500,000 grant from NEH titled, \u201cRediscovering American Democracy: Teaching Humanities in the Time of Covid,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0awarded to\u00a0Melinda Knight<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Jonathan Greenberg<\/a>\u00a0of English and\u00a0Jeffery Strickland<\/a>\u00a0of History.<\/p>\n
