{"id":210582,"date":"2022-12-09T10:17:27","date_gmt":"2022-12-09T15:17:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/chss\/?p=210582"},"modified":"2022-12-09T10:17:27","modified_gmt":"2022-12-09T15:17:27","slug":"english-ba-ma-students-present-papers-in-spain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/chss\/2022\/12\/09\/english-ba-ma-students-present-papers-in-spain\/","title":{"rendered":"English BA\/MA students present papers in Spain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Alfredo Alvarez and Victoria Bustamante, both students in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/english\/programs-of-study\/ba-ma-program\/\">English BA\/MA<\/a> program, presented papers on Shakespeare to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sederi.org\/\">SEDERI<\/a> (the Spanish and Portuguese Society for English Renaissance Studies) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sederi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Programme.pdf\">International Conference for Junior Researchers of Early Modern English Studies in October<\/a> at the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM) in Spain. They were two of only three American students and the only undergraduates selected. Alfredo&#8217;s paper, \u201c\u2019My face I\u2019ll grime with filth\u2019: Revealing Whiteness in <em>King Lear<\/em>,&#8221; reads Shakespeare through the lens of Critical Race Theory; Victoria\u2019s \u201c\u2018Villain am I none\u2019: The Self and the Other in Shakespeare\u2019s <em>Romeo and Juliet<\/em>\u201d offers a mainly Levinasian reading of tragedy, identity, and difference in that play. Both papers began as projects in Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/profilepages\/view_profile.php?username=lieblern\">Naomi Liebler\u2019s<\/a> graduate course on Theoretical Approaches to Literature. Their attendance at the conference was supported by travel grants from CHSS Dean <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/profilepages\/view_profile.php?username=kingstonep&amp;\">Peter Kingstone<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/english\/\">English <\/a>Department chair <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/profilepages\/view_profile.php?username=greenbergj\">Jonathan Greenberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Alfredo Alvarez and Victoria Bustamante, both students in the English BA\/MA program, presented papers on Shakespeare to the SEDERI (the Spanish and Portuguese Society for English Renaissance Studies) International Conference for Junior Researchers of Early Modern English Studies in October at the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM) in Spain.
