{"id":210885,"date":"2023-03-03T11:50:47","date_gmt":"2023-03-03T16:50:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/chss\/?p=210885"},"modified":"2023-03-13T11:55:01","modified_gmt":"2023-03-13T15:55:01","slug":"campus-event-puts-spotlight-on-marriage-penalty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/chss\/2023\/03\/03\/campus-event-puts-spotlight-on-marriage-penalty\/","title":{"rendered":"Campus Event Puts Spotlight on &#8220;Marriage Penalty&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/~gerbere\">Elaine Gerber<\/a>, Associate Professor of <a href=\"http:\/\/montclair.edu\/anthropology\">Anthropology<\/a> and Vice President of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/disability-caucus\/\">Disability Caucus<\/a> at Montclair State University, coordinated a campus event in support of marriage equality for disabled Americans.<\/p>\n<p>The event, I DO! Commit to Marriage Equality,\u00a0 held on Feb. 15 at the School of Communication and Media, brought attention to the economic struggles and limitations disabled couples face if they decide to tie the knot. Currently, many disabled Americans can\u2019t legally marry because they will lose or significantly reduce their state or federal benefits that they often rely on.<\/p>\n<p>The evening culminated with a mass commitment ceremony, similar to the unofficial proceedings disabled couples often opt for to protect their benefits, with the hopes of calling attention to the \u201cmarriage penalty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt literally takes hours and hours behind the scenes to get people, not only to open purse strings, but to work collectively to bring an event to life,\u201d Gerber says. \u201cI was incredibly proud of what we were able to accomplish!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On campus, the Disability Caucus works to raise awareness about disability culture, rights and justice.
