{"id":11918,"date":"2013-10-07T16:22:45","date_gmt":"2013-10-07T20:22:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/news\/article.php?ArticleID=11918"},"modified":"2019-03-22T11:26:16","modified_gmt":"2019-03-22T15:26:16","slug":"11918_salon-series-tackles-why-america-is-world-s-biggest-jailer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/college-of-communication-and-media\/2013\/10\/07\/11918_salon-series-tackles-why-america-is-world-s-biggest-jailer\/","title":{"rendered":"Salon Series Tackles &#8216;Why America is World&#8217;s Biggest Jailer&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S. locks up more people than any other nation in the world, making it the planet&#8217;s largest jailer.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>On October 9, Merrill Brown, Director of the School of Communication and Media at Montclair State University, will moderate a discussion of the policies that created the U.S.&#8217;s high incarceration rates and what can or should be done to responsibly reduce the rates of those incarcerated at a film screening and discussion titled,\u00a0<strong style=\"line-height: 19.59375px;\">Crisis in American Criminal Justice System: The Cycle of Injustice From Arrest and Incarceration to Re-entry.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Brown will be joined by three notable panelists:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dawn Porter, Montclair resident and producer\/director of the award-wining HBO documentary Gideon&#8217;s Army, an official selection of the Sundance Film Festival 2013.<\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/bio\/david-fathi\" target=\"_blank\">David Fathi<\/a>, Director of the ACLU&#8217;s Prison Project, an expert in the use of solitary confinement and conditions in &#8220;Super Max&#8221; prison.<\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/profilepages\/view_profile.php?username=henryj\" target=\"_blank\">Jessica S.
