{"id":16339,"date":"2016-04-22T09:33:31","date_gmt":"2016-04-22T13:33:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/news\/article.php?ArticleID=16339"},"modified":"2018-04-25T13:35:52","modified_gmt":"2018-04-25T17:35:52","slug":"16339_faculty-member-steve-mccarthy-produces-msnbc-documentaries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/college-of-communication-and-media\/2016\/04\/22\/16339_faculty-member-steve-mccarthy-produces-msnbc-documentaries\/","title":{"rendered":"Faculty Member Steve McCarthy Produces MSNBC Documentaries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MSNBC\u2019s Chris Matthews dove into this unpredictable election year with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/msnbc-web-only\/watch\/sunday-documentaries-on-msnbc-668534851718\">two documentary profiles of presidential election front-runners Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0 produced by School of Communication and Media journalism and film instructor Steve McCarthy.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHillary Clinton: It Takes A Country\u201d is a new special that aired Sunday, April 24 that looked beyond the headlines to examine the Democratic candidate\u2019s historic political course.<\/p>\n<p>It followed a re-run of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/msnbc-web-only\/watch\/-citizen-trump-with-chris-matthews-668568131672\">\u201cCitizen Trump,\u201d<\/a> the McCarthy-produced Chris Matthews special on Republican front-runner Donald Trump that aired originally in December.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve been covering Presidential campaigns since the \u201880s and this has to be the most interesting, unpredictable and surprising race I&#8217;ve ever covered,\u201d said McCarthy, an Emmy Award-winning producer who has worked on programs such as \u201c60 Minutes\u201d and \u201cDateline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat makes these two documentaries important is that we go beyond the horse race and tell the fascinating life stories of the two leading candidates, Secretary Clinton and Mr. Trump,\u201d McCarthy explained.\u201cThrough interviewing those who covered and participated in campaigns and by delving into the extensive archives of NBC News, I was able to stitch together compelling narratives of each candidate&#8217;s life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Working with MSNBC\u2019s Chris Matthews has been a professional pleasure for McCarthy. \u201cHe&#8217;s one of America&#8217;s top political analysts and authors and his insights into these stories were important and powerful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy shared his experiences with his students, so they could see just how a cable news hour is produced. \u201cWe went over the booking, interviewing, scriptwriting and editing in the fall semester for &#8216;Citizen Trump.&#8217;
