{"id":18435,"date":"2017-10-03T23:17:51","date_gmt":"2017-10-04T03:17:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/news\/article.php?ArticleID=18435"},"modified":"2018-05-29T15:55:59","modified_gmt":"2018-05-29T19:55:59","slug":"18435_-center-for-cooperative-media-identifies-models-for-collaborative-journalism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/college-of-communication-and-media\/2017\/10\/03\/18435_-center-for-cooperative-media-identifies-models-for-collaborative-journalism\/","title":{"rendered":"Center for Cooperative Media Identifies Models for Collaborative Journalism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Friday, September 29,\u00a0the Center for Cooperative Media, whose mission is to grow and strengthen local journalism, released its latest research report &#8220;Comparing Models of Collaborative Journalism.&#8221;\u00a0 The report, which was written by Research Director Sarah Stonbely, identifies six models for collaborative journalism, and catalogs 44 ongoing collaborations across 500-plus newsrooms, mostly in the U.S. but increasingly in Europe as well. \u00a0Collaborative journalism can be defined as seeking \u201cto produce content that is greater than what any individual journalist, newsroom, or organization could produce on its own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white none repeat scroll 0% 0%;\">You can read the report, download the full PDF, and watch the center\u2019s presentation and panel discussion <a href=\"https:\/\/collaborativejournalism.org\/models\/\">here<\/a>. A handful of printed copies are also available in the center\u2019s office in suite #2109 in the new School of Communication facility.<\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white none repeat scroll 0% 0%;\">A number of trade publications also reported on the report.\u00a0 These include:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.niemanlab.org\/2017\/09\/here-are-6-different-kinds-of-collaborative-journalism-and-the-good-and-bad-things-about-each\/\">Nieman Journalism Lab<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poynter.org\/news\/4-things-successful-newsroom-collaborations-share\">Poynter<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.journalism.co.uk\/news\/6-types-of-collaborations-news-organisations\/s2\/a710908\/\">Journalism.co.uk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white none repeat scroll 0% 0%;\">In her research, Stonbely focuses on cooperative arrangements, formal and informal, between two or more news and information organizations which aim to supplement each group\u2019s resources and maximize the impact of the content produced.<\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white none repeat scroll 0% 0%;\">Briefly, the six collaborative models identified in the report are:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Temporary and separate <\/strong>One-time\/finite projects in which partners create content separately and share it.<\/p>\n<p>2. <strong>Temporary and co-creating<\/strong>:\u00a0\u201cOne-time\/finite project in which partners work together to create content.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Temporary and integrated:<\/strong> One-time\/finite projects in which partners share content\/data\/resources at the organizational level<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Ongoing and separate: <\/strong>\u201cOngoing\/open-ended collaborations in which partners create content separately and share it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Ongoing and co-creating:<\/strong> Ongoing\/open-ended collaborations in which partners work together to create content<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. Ongoing and integrated: <\/strong>Ongoing\/open-ended collaborations in which partners share content\/data\/resources at the organizational level.<\/p>\n<p>Stonbely emphasizes the importance of the research report. &#8220;As we document, collaborative journalism is now being practiced on a scale that constitutes a revolution in journalism,&#8221; she writes. &#8220;The many trials and errors of the last decade have generated cooperative efforts that have stood the test of time and are showing the way for others.\u00a0 In addition to Stonbely\u2019s contribution, the report was edited by recent John S. Knight Journalism at Stanford fellow Heather Bryant.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background: white none repeat scroll 0% 0%;\">The Center for Cooperative Media is a grant-funded program based at\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/\"><span style=\"color: windowtext; background: white none repeat scroll 0% 0%; text-decoration: none;\">Montclair State University<\/span><\/a><span style=\"background: white none repeat scroll 0% 0%;\">\u2018s\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/arts\/college-of-communication-and-media\/\"><span style=\"color: windowtext; background: white none repeat scroll 0% 0%; text-decoration: none;\">School of Communication and Media<\/span><\/a><span style=\"background: white none repeat scroll 0% 0%;\">.
