The camp is celebrating its 17<sup>th<\/sup> year this summer, but this will be the first time that the Sports Broadcasting Camp will take place in the School. \u00a0The students, who range from 14 to 17 years of age, will develop various broadcasting skills while they get some hands-on experience working with state-of-the-art technology at the brand new facilities of the School.<\/p>\n<p>David Siroty, the camp\u2019s general manager, was impressed by the School\u2019s recent expansion and the development of its communications programs. Although Siroty and his associates at the camp visited other schools as potential locations, Siroty was \u201cblown away\u201d when he toured MSU and is happy to make the move from the camp\u2019s previous location at the Yogi Berra Museum. The campers will have access to the most advanced cameras, audio equipment, and news sets in order to create their own sports broadcasts and news packages.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from being a renowned sports journalist, Assistant Professor of Sports Media and Journalism, Kelly Whiteside, says that sports media is a growing area of interest not just at Montclair State University, but as a profession. \u201cWe want to get the word out about our expanding sports media program, so offering these kids the opportunity to use cutting-edge equipment from our School of Communication is a perfect fit for what we hope to accomplish,\u201d says Whiteside. Whiteside says that the School of Communication is trying to add more sports media classes and possibly offer it as a major in the school.<\/p>\n<p>The camp helps prepare students to pursue a career in sports broadcasting by giving the kids opportunities to develop practical skills while also having fun. The campers will meet the Somerset Patriots and conduct field interviews with players and coaches.
