{"id":207244,"date":"2018-08-30T09:45:08","date_gmt":"2018-08-30T13:45:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/college-of-communication-and-media\/?p=207244"},"modified":"2018-08-30T10:45:01","modified_gmt":"2018-08-30T14:45:01","slug":"scm-teams-up-with-the-metropolitan-opera-guild-for-fifth-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/college-of-communication-and-media\/2018\/08\/30\/scm-teams-up-with-the-metropolitan-opera-guild-for-fifth-year\/","title":{"rendered":"SCM Teams Up With The Metropolitan Opera Guild For Fifth Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For the past five years, a number of SCM students have been working with some of the music world\u2019s greatest classical composers \u2013 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Guiseppi Verdi, Gaetano Donizetti, Humperdinck, and Franz Lehar, to name a few.\u00a0 How can it be that today\u2019s students can collaborate with these long dead artists?\u00a0 Thanks to a core SCM course \u2013 Transmedia Projects \u2013 students in the course have literally taken works from specific operas and created larger and more dimensional story worlds from the basic story that\u2019s told in specific operas. Last year&#8217;s project generated some very <a href=\"https:\/\/ga.vyond.com\/videos\/0FN_XY78W1FU?utm_source=linkshare&amp;utm_medium=linkshare&amp;utm_campaign=usercontent\">engaging content<\/a> for the Metropolitan Opera Guild.<\/p>\n<p>Traditional storytelling is essentially two-dimensional and linear.\u00a0 Transmedia uses different media platforms to delve deeper into the world and its character and providing the audience a much richer story world experience.<\/p>\n<p>This semester, one Transmedia Projects course will be developing the story worlds for two famous operas that are part of the Metropolitan Opera\u2019s upcoming season\u2019s offerings \u2013 \u201cOtello\u201d and \u201cLa Fille du Regiment,\u201d or \u201cDaughter of the Regiment.\u201d\u00a0 They will be doing this by telling the audience, in this case, public school students, what is happening to the characters when they\u2019re not in the libretto.\u00a0 Character motivation, plot issues, and relationships are explored in greater detail, all aimed at helping young students to better understand what\u2019s happening in the opera.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, the students in the class will produce a series of short one-minute animations that explore the characters, plot and story in the specific operas.\u00a0 Scripts will be written, the animations will be created, and then real voices will be added.
