{"id":209980,"date":"2022-12-07T14:21:53","date_gmt":"2022-12-07T19:21:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/college-of-communication-and-media\/?p=209980"},"modified":"2024-04-08T11:21:48","modified_gmt":"2024-04-08T15:21:48","slug":"209980","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/college-of-communication-and-media\/2022\/12\/07\/209980\/","title":{"rendered":"Montclair State&#8217;s Radio Station WMSC Nominated for Eight National Broadcasting Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wmscradio.com\/\">WMSC \u201cThe Voice of Montclair State\u201d<\/a> is a finalist in eight 2023 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibsradio.org\/\">Intercollegiate Broadcasting System<\/a> (IBS) Awards categories, including Best College Radio Station (more than 10,000), Best Campus News and Best Live Music Broadcast.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These nominations come after awards and prestigious nominations the station earned in 2022, including four first place awards for \u201cBest Special Broadcast, \u201cBest Show Promos\u201d and \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Best Celebrity or Artist\/Band Interview,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d and 13 finalist awards<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">including the National Broadcasters Association Marconi Award. Here are the 2023 IBS nominations:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Best Live Music Broadcast \u201cThe Happy Fits &#8211; \u2018Hold Me Down\u2019 (WMSC Unplugged)\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Best Radio Drama \u201cThe Golden Record\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Best Logo \u201cIdentity Crisis Logo\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Best Campus News \u201cCampus Sexual Assault Protest\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Best Program Promotion Video \u201cHeavy is the Crown\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Best College Station in the Nation (universities of more than 10,000 students)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Best News Director &#8211; Hannah Cox<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Best Business Director &#8211; Sabrina Hajsok<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c The WMSC team continues to deliver quality on and off-air work with content and leadership that resonates with our audience\u201d said WMSC General Manager, Anabella Poland. \u201cThey are what every professor hopes their students to be, engaged, resourceful,\u00a0 and dedicated..\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Senior filmmaking major and office manager Sabrina Hajsok is nominated for Best Business Director for the second consecutive year. Hajsok thanks General Manager Anabella Poland, her assistant Aly Erario and station manager Ben Ptruk for pushing her to do her best.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWMSC has been such a huge part of my life since my freshman year and I am truly grateful for all of the people, experiences, and memories I\u2019ve made at this station,\u201d said Hajsok. \u201cI am sincerely grateful to have been nominated for this award again\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Senior Journalism and Digital Media major Hannah Cox is nominated for Best News Director. \u201cI could not be up for consideration for Best News Director without the support from our news team and station,\u201d said Cox. \u201cTheir belief and trust in me to direct news coverage and provide a public service keeps me going.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Programming director Leslie Gallagher is a senior Communication and Media Arts major. She reflects on her years of experience at the station and shares great pride for the Best College Radio Station (more than 10,000) nomination for 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAs a Montclair State University student, it fills me with so much pride to be able to have these opportunities,\u201d said Gallagher. \u201cWMSC provides us with valuable industry experience and being recognized like this helps us solidify that our hard work is worth it, and we are learning every day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In his junior year, WMSC booker JT Bethea is a finalist for two categories, including Best Campus News \u201cCampus Sexual Assault Protest.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI ran out with my recorder and did my best with what I had, and I\u2019m so happy with the resulting product,\u201d said Bethea. He thanks his peers and colleagues, and General Manager, Anabella Poland for pushing him to be better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bethea and his co-host Terry Dickerson are nominated for Best Logo for \u201cIdentity Crisis,\u201d\u00a0 their show that follows a person of color in America through news, culture, and entertainment. \u201cEver since I joined WMSC, there&#8217;s been nothing but a drive to be better and do my absolute best to improve my work on and off air.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">WMSC\u2019s nomination for Best Live Music Performance comes from an episode of weekly live performance show, \u201cWMSC Unplugged.\u201d The nomination is shared amongst the station&#8217;s music and engineering teams who work in collaboration to showcase local artists in an intimate style.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Junior Television and Film major and music librarian Emily McCormack cites the WMSC music team as the place she got her start on Montclair State\u2019s campus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cA couple years ago, I sat in my room wondering if I was ever going to see live music again,\u201d said McCormack. \u201cI am grateful for the opportunity given to me by WMSC and Montclair State to work with such passionate people on a daily basis and have the chance to work with a talented up-and-coming local band like The Happy Fits!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Animation major and recent graduate Kyle Pepitone is nominated for his improvisational and metal music show \u201cHeavy is the Crown\u201d for Best Program Promotion Video. Co-hosted by Emily McCormack, the show follows musicians who share esteemed artists in the metal scene, all while discussing their musical backgrounds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c\u2018Heavy Is The Crown\u2019 wouldn\u2019t have been remotely possible without WMSC and Montclair State University as a whole. The station gave us the opportunity and a platform to host our show,\u201d said Pepitone. \u201cHearing the news that the show was nominated for an IBS award was better than any metal song that\u2019s ever been made!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is the fourth year at WMSC for Carley Campbell,\u00a0 the station\u2019s production director and senior journalism major. Campbell is nominated for Best Radio Drama for the educational piece, \u201cThe Golden Record.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cSeeing the title of my radio drama on the list surprised me beyond belief!\u201d said Campbell. \u201cBeing part of the station gave me an opportunity to make a radio drama based on a real-life event that made me cry.
