{"id":211232,"date":"2025-03-27T16:07:23","date_gmt":"2025-03-27T20:07:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/college-of-communication-and-media\/?p=211232"},"modified":"2025-03-27T16:07:23","modified_gmt":"2025-03-27T20:07:23","slug":"montclair-scm-professor-chloe-sarbib-selected-for-prestigious-sundance-screenwriters-lab","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/college-of-communication-and-media\/2025\/03\/27\/montclair-scm-professor-chloe-sarbib-selected-for-prestigious-sundance-screenwriters-lab\/","title":{"rendered":"Montclair SCM Professor Chloe Sarbib Selected for Prestigious Sundance Screenwriters Lab"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Montclair SCM Assistant Professor Chloe Sarbib earned a coveted spot in the 2025 Sundance Screenwriters Lab in January, leading to valuable tips for her burgeoning film project and lessons she has carried to the classroom for students taking her Film 3 and Thesis courses this semester.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Sundance Screenwriters Lab is a five-day, immersive workshop held annually at the Sundance Mountain Resort in Utah. The prestigious program offers emerging screenwriters the opportunity to refine their projects with guidance from top industry professionals. Only nine other filmmakers received invitations from a pool of more than 3,300 applications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Participants receive one-on-one mentorship from accomplished filmmakers and engage in group activities designed to sharpen their scripts. The lab\u2019s creative co-directors, Scott Frank (creator of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Queen\u2019s Gambit<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) and Jessie Nelson (writer of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Waitress<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">), guide the process alongside other industry veterans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s such an act of generosity,\u201d Sarbib said of the advisors\u2019 dedication to mentoring participants without compensation. \u201cIt\u2019s been a tough time for the film industry, and it was heartening to be in a space that felt safe and supportive.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Without giving too much away about her project, Sarbib said, \u201cIt\u2019s a movie about loss, identity, and reconciling the fantasy of who you are and who your family is with reality.\u201d The film unfolds in a single location in Normandy over the span of a few days, a creative decision that helps the project&#8217;s feasibility given the relatively limited budget typical of independent productions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Following her experience at the Sundance Lab, Sarbib is immersed in rewriting her script. \u201cThe program is designed to help you clarify your intentions as a filmmaker,\u201d she said. \u201cThe advisors aren\u2019t trying to shape the project to fit market expectations \u2014they\u2019re helping you refine your own voice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While Sarbib acknowledges that filmmaking timelines are unpredictable, she\u2019s hopeful that her time at the Sundance Lab will accelerate her project\u2019s development. \u201cIndependent films can sometimes take eight to ten years to make,\u201d she said. \u201cBut I believe Sundance will help shorten that timeline.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For Sarbib, the experience has already opened new doors. \u201cI\u2019ve had meetings with potential collaborators, and it\u2019s exciting to feel momentum building,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe are extremely proud of Professor Sarbib for receiving this honor,\u201d said Dr. Keith Strudler, Dean of Montclair\u2019s School of Communication and Media. \u201cNot only will she continue to receive incredible insights from industry leaders for her project, but her students will continue to benefit from her unique experience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Back on campus, Sarbib\u2019s students followed her journey closely. \u201cThey were so excited for me and full of questions before and after I got back.\u201d Drawing from her lab experience, Sarbib has incorporated new insights into her teaching. She shared her project\u2019s visual lookbook with her students, illustrating how some of the assignments they do in class (students make lookbooks for their own short films) directly apply to real-world filmmaking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s important for students to see that success isn\u2019t instant,\u201d she said, noting that this was the third time she applied to be a fellow at the Sundance Lab. \u201cI\u2019ve told them about the rejections I faced.
