Sautter III Center for Strategic Communication<\/a> in the College of Communication and Media and the Department of Justice Studies shows a dramatic increase in content containing the slur \u201cretard\u201d on X after Donald Trump\u2019s Thanksgiving Day Truth Social post used the word.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Highlights from the study include:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u2022 <strong>A 225.7% increase in posts containing the r-word on X.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u2022 <strong>About 1.12 million posts using the r-word identified in the week after Donald Trump\u2019s Thanksgiving message used the term.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u2022 <strong>The most viewed, liked and shared content in the period studied enthusiastically endorsed the r-word.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>\u2022 Results are consistent with the period after other prominent accounts used the word, but with greater overall volume reflecting the reach of a U.S. president.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe normalization of speech that marginalizes has become a prominent part of social media,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/profilepages\/view_profile.php?username=peterkabentd\">Daniela Peterka-Benton<\/a>, Ph.D., a professor of Justice Studies at Montclair State University and editor of the book <i>Human Trafficking and Disabilities<\/i>, which focuses on the vulnerabilities of the disabled community. \u201cThe dangers of the online space for those who have been marginalized appear to be increasing rapidly,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cInfluential voices online have a responsibility to do better, and many seem to be shirking that responsibility in cases like this one,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/profilepages\/view_profile.php?username=bentonb\">Bond Benton<\/a>, Ph.D., professor of Communication at Montclair State University.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The full study, which can be found <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/digitalcommons.montclair.edu\/scom-facpubs\/64\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, was conducted by Benton from the Joetta Di Bella and Fred C.
