Sautter III Center for Strategic <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Communication in the College of Communication and Media (CCOM) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/justice-studies\/\">Department of Justice Studies<\/a> <\/span><span class=\"s1\">conducted an initial review of the manifesto posted by the shooters who attacked the Islamic Center of <\/span><span class=\"s1\">San Diego on May 18, 2026. Findings were consistent with their previously published research on the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">manifesto of Buffalo supermarket shooter Payton Gendron from 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">Notable insights into the San Diego shooters\u2019 manifesto include:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">-38 references to mass shooters who also posted manifestos; Payton Gendron and Brenton<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">-Tarrant were noted as \u201cthe biggest catalyst towards my radicalization.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">-The \u201cGreat Replacement\u201d conspiracy was mentioned 11 times in the document.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">-The San Diego Mosque shooters\u2019 manifesto mimics the form and content of previous <\/span><span class=\"s1\">extremist attackers\u2019 manifestos; particularly Gendron\u2019s text.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">-Content from spaces such as 4chan, 8kun, and fringe extremist sites are integrated, <\/span><span class=\"s1\">repurposed, and plagiarized throughout the document (consistent with other recent extremist <\/span><span class=\"s1\">manifestos).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOur previous research has shown extremist manifestos are derivative documents, with the Gendron <\/span><span class=\"s1\">manifesto plagiarizing more than 80% of its content,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/profilepages\/view_profile.php?username=peterkabentd\">Dr. Daniela Peterka-Benton<\/a>, Professor of <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Justice Studies at Montclair State University. \u201cMaterial from extremist sites and platforms can be the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">pieces that make up such rationales for attacks,\u201d she added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe extensive references made to the manifestos of other mass shooters is concerning,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/profilepages\/view_profile.php?username=bentonb\">Dr. Bond Benton<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\">, Professor of Strategic Communication at Montclair State University. \u201cSuch repetition shows that these <\/span><span class=\"s1\">documents inspire imitation and are created to place the attacker within a lineage of violent actors they <\/span><span class=\"s1\">look up to.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">Peterka-Benton and Benton\u2019s published research on radicalization to violence in the online space can be <\/span><span class=\"s1\">found <a href=\"https:\/\/journal-derad.com\/index.php\/jd\/article\/view\/737\">here<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Media Contact: Keith Green, greenk@montclair.edu, 973-655-3701<\/p>\n<p><b>About the College of Communication and Media:<\/b>\u00a0The College of Communication and Media (CCOM) offers a range of dynamic programs to a talented and diverse student population of over 2,000.
