Hello and welcome to the Department of Broadcasting. This has been a year of changes for our program – one of them being my appointment as chair after our fearless leader for the past 20 years, Larry Londino<\/strong>, stepped down as chair in order to return to teaching full time this past spring. We are all truly grateful for his years of service.<\/p>\n The DuMont Television Center has undergone dramatic renovations, greatly increasing the size of Studio B, and becoming a full high-definition state-of-the-art production facility… WMSC campus radio is no longer a student club, but part of the academic department with a new station manager, Dick Hinchliffe<\/strong>, overseeing operations… a staff news producer, Steve McCarthy<\/strong>, has been hired to develop outside professional projects with the department. Even more additions are planned for the near future, including the building of a multi-format newsroom and new audio facilities.<\/p>\n Our two weekly shows, Carpe Diem<\/strong><\/em> and Inside MSU<\/strong><\/em>, are going strong and reach more than 500,000 homes in northern New Jersey, and 17,000-plus on campus, respectively. Recent guests on Carpe Diem<\/em> included Tommy James and Maestro George Marriner Maull.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n On Sept. 9, the department produced a live webcast, Commemorating 9\/11<\/em><\/strong>, in cooperation with CBS News<\/em>, the University Division for Information Technology and Communications, the academic departments of Communication Studies, Art and Design, Theater and Dance, and Cali School of Music, along with the Muslim Student Association and Veteran’s Association. The webcast looked back at that day 10 years ago, and explored the political, cultural and artistic fallout from the attacks. We featured interviews with students, alumni, faculty, eyewitnesses and prominent journalists.<\/p>\n Our next webcast is scheduled for December when we will focus on the issue of bullying and welcome a host of experts to campus – including legendary folk singer\/activist Peter Yarrow (of the famed group Peter, Paul, & Mary), who started Operation Respect<\/em> in response to this problem.<\/p>\n I\u2019m also happy to say that we will be awarding our annual DuMont Broadcaster of the Year award for 2011 to alumnus Tom Kaminski, a 1984 graduate, who has been the \u201ceye in the sky\u201d for WCBS Newsradio<\/em> listeners since 1988 and received many broadcast awards for his reporting.<\/p>\n We recently held our 18th annual alumni party in October, where more than 50 alumni returned to campus to honor Larry for his service as chair, to visit with us and to mingle with current students. As always, it was great to see our former students and to catch up.<\/p>\n As for me, I\u2019ve been jetting across the pond since I took over the reins in the department. I spent a month teaching in Sicily this past summer with eight of our student majors and I just returned last month from a trip to Estonia where I participated in the International Music Council’s World Forum on Music<\/em>, focusing on Intellectual Property Issues and Music & Social Change<\/em>. We hope to have several of the speakers I met there, who came from as far away as Sweden, Afghanistan and Cairo, join me on a panel at Montclair State this spring to explore the role that music, the arts, and the media play in creating social change. The panel will be part of a month-long series produced by the Global Education Center’s Justice and Civil Society in the Muslim World<\/em>.<\/p>\n It promises to be an exciting year and I\u2019m really looking forward to all that it will bring. For more on news from the department, check out the current edition of our On-Air<\/em> Newsletter.<\/p>\n Dr. David Sanders, <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Three of the New York area’s top sports broadcasting anchors – ESPN Radio<\/em>‘s Don La Greca and Jared Max and WCBS Radio<\/em>‘s Gordon Damer – provided Montclair State broadcasting students some fascinating insights into their business during a wide-ranging discussion at the Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center on Oct. 17.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Broadcasting alumna Ines Rosales gave her all at her last job at Metro Traffic. Hard work paid off: Today, she is the traffic reporter for Fox News<\/em>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n<\/div>\n <\/p>\n LARRY LONDINO<\/strong> was named to the United States Golf Association\/Professional Golfers Association task force to\u00a0establish a repository for artifacts and documents related to the history of African Americans\u00a0in golf, and also serving on the Aural History Committee. He shot, produced and hosted a Carpe Diem episode on senior actors at the Paper Mill Playhouse last spring.<\/p>\n BEVERLY PETERSON<\/strong> was invited to Cardiff, Wales, to\u00a0present her transmedia documentary project NoJobIsWorthThis.com at the\u00a0seventh International Workplace Bullying & Harassment Conference last year. A Global Ed award allowed her to return to Guatemala to complete\u00a0production for a documentary about the extraordinary fieldwork of Maria\u00a0Martin, a pioneering NPR Journalist, as she provides training to\u00a0indigenous journalists who are the main link between their villages and\u00a0the global community.\u00a0 This work-in-progress has been screened at:\u00a0the 2010 National Endowment for Democracy, Washington DC;\u00a0 and 2011 “El Cuentro,” a conference for Guatemalan journalists in Antigua, Guatemala. She was also interviewed and quoted in \u201cOffice Bullies: The Big Business of Battling Them,\u201d in Business Week<\/em>, and interviewed and featured in\u00a0\u201cDefend Yourself Against Workplace Bullying,\u201d on NY1\u00a0news package broadcast in the tri-state area.<\/p>\n PATRICIA PIROH<\/strong> served: as coordinating producer for the series, The Giblin Report<\/em>, a series that is produced for Assemblyman Thomas P. Giblin; as advisor to Montclair State\u2019s Student Chapter of Alliance for Women in Media (formerly American Women in Radio and Television); on the Editorial Advisory Board for Making Waves<\/em>, the AWM magazine; on the Town of Montclair\u2019s Communication Advisory Committee; on the Global Education Grant Committee; on the College of the Arts’ Convocation committee; and on the Task Force for the School of Media Arts and Communication. She also attended the Alliance for Arts and Health Conference in Hamilton in March; chaired a subcommittee on admissions and alumni relations for the new School of Communication and Media Arts; and attended the second Annual Arts in Healing Coalition Conference in Morristown in May. DAVID SANDERS<\/strong> produced and hosted the National Music Council\u2019s 30th annual American Eagle Awards with Nile Rodgers, Peter Yarrow, and Paquito D\u2019Rivera and participated in the International Music Council’s \/World Forum on Music\/, focusing on Intellectual Property Issues and Music & Social Change. Sanders also conducted an interview with Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary, to be included in a special webcast on bullying and an upcoming edition of Carpe Diem.<\/p>\n MAGDALENA DORIS<\/strong>, ANDREW JUPINA<\/strong>, ERIKA SANTORO<\/strong> were all awarded 2010 Radio Club of America Scholarship Awards.<\/p>\n AUGUST PAULE<\/strong> participated in Montclair State\u2019s fifth annual Student Research Symposium.<\/p>\n Congratulations 2011 Department of Broadcasting\u2019s Graduates and Award Recipients! \n<\/strong>MARC ROSENWEIG<\/strong> conducted a successful survey of sports media ethics standards with 111 sports media professionals participating from across the country. The survey results have been published on more than a dozen sports media sites and cited in a column by the Poynter Institute.\u00a0 The survey was a centerpiece for two panels he moderated over the past year in conjunction with the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center on the Montclair State campus. The panels centered on sports media ethics, particularly in the age of Twitter and Facebook. They were taped and produced as Carpe Diem<\/em> episodes that aired on local cable. He also produced and participated in a panel titled \u201cHe Shoots, He Scores, He Tweets: The Ethics and Implications of Social Media in Sports Journalism,\u201d at the 2010 AEJMC Convention in Denver. He launched a column for the247newsroom.com, which examines important media issues, including the impact of new media, ethics and media management on the communications field. Interviewed MY 9 News<\/em> anchor Brenda Blackmon, who received the Allen B. DuMont Broadcaster of the Year Award, for a special edition of Carpe Diem<\/em>. Through Global Education, guest lectured on Media Management to MBA students visiting Montclair State\u2019s campus from the University of Gratz and took them on a tour of CNBC. The Montclarion<\/em>, on which he serves as faculty advisor, was honored by the Society of Professional Journalists for the second consecutive year with a Mark of Excellence Award and awarded second place in Region 1 (the northeast) for editorial writing during the past year. Also continues to serve on the board of screeners for judging of the DuPont Columbia Awards and served as a judge for the Newswomen\u2019s Club of New York awards.<\/p>\nStudents<\/em><\/h2>\n
