At the Clinical Biofeedback Laboratory, we study the use of visual biofeedback as a form of intervention for speech sound errors. Visual biofeedback uses instrumentation to provide real-time information about aspects of speech that the speaker has limited insight into under ordinary circumstances, with the goal of bringing these processes under conscious control (Volin, 1998). For this form of therapy, participants are given a real-time visual representation of a speech sound. With guidance from the clinician, participants attempt to produce the target sound while watching the display. Participants are taught to modify their own output in an effort to achieve a closer match with the visual model.
Various technologies can be harnessed to provide visual biofeedback for speech. Our lab is currently investigating the effectiveness of three types of real-time biofeedback in therapy for misarticulation of the /r/ sound. The three types we focus on are acoustic, ultrasound and electropalatographic (EPG) biofeedback.
