Application Requirements

PhD in Counseling

  • Master’s degree in counseling or closely related field
  • GRE scores, taken within the last five years
  • Official transcripts of previous earned degrees and coursework
  • Three professional letters of recommendation
  • Current resume
  • Response to three essays

Master’s in Counseling Program

  • Transcript: one from each college attended
  • Write an essay of no more than three double spaced pages in response to the prompt below. Your essay should reflect your developing knowledge of and interest in the counseling profession and your potential place within it. Address each of the areas identified below:
    • What draws you to counseling and the particular concentration you have chosen within that profession;
    • Discuss any personal and professional experiences that have helped prepare you to begin graduate studies in the counseling profession;
    • Share your perspective regarding the role of multiculturalism and social justice in counseling
  • Letters of recommendation: Two (If graduated from any academic program in the past three years, one letter must be from a professor
  • Resume: Required

Master’s in Educational Leadership Program (P-12)

  • GRE or MAT test scores (waived with a GPA of 3.0 or higher or with a previously earned M.A. degree (or higher) from an accredited United States college or university)
  • All college and graduate school official transcripts
  • Personal essay
  • Letters of recommendation (please see note below)
  • Standard Teaching Certificate or Educational Service Certificate
  • At least three years of eligible K-12 teaching or educational services. (Preschool teaching makes one eligible for the program, but may not make on eligible for the certifications.)

Educational Leadership Higher Education Program

  • GRE test scores (A waiver is applied if: You’ve earned a previous master’s degree (or higher) from an accredited United States college or university; You’ve earned an overall undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher; You’ve earned the equivalent of a United States master’s degree from an international institution as evaluated by a National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) member.)
  • Official transcripts of previously earned degrees and coursework
  • Personal essay to the prompts that can be found on The Graduate School web site
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Resume

Advanced Counseling (Post-Master’s Certificate) program:

  • Transcript: One from each college attended
  • Essay/Personal statement
  • Two letters of recommendation

School Counselors (Post-Master’s Certificate) program:

  • Transcript: One from each college attended
  • Essay/Personal statement
  • Two letters of recommendation

Substance Awareness Coordinator (Student Assistance Coordinator) Certification program:

  • Transcript: One from each college attended
  • Essay/Personal statement

Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (Certificate) program:

  • Transcript: One from each college attended
  • Essay/Personal statement: Please explain your interest in the Certified Alcohol & Drug Certification

Letters of Recommendation:

At least one of your two letters of recommendation should be academic, from a former professor who can attest to your ability to do graduate-level work. This requirement may be waived if you have not been enrolled in college or graduate school in more than seven years.

Letters of recommendation from colleagues, friends or family are not acceptable.
