and &#8220;Artworlds&#8221; &#8211; A Fresh Approach via Pierre Bourdieu &#8211; by Laura Cirigliano and Ronald Sharps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>How do you think theater should evolve in order to make it more sustainable?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>What needs does theater fill in the U.K. and the U.S. and how can we cater to these needs so that this art form continues to thrive in an economic downturn?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>By the time CRC visitors to a new blog by Montclair State University Masters Candidate in Arts Management Laura Cirigliano &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/syriggs.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_self\">Play by Play:\u00a0Theatrical Darwinism <\/a>&#8212; have finished working their\u00a0way through <a href=\"https:\/\/syriggs.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_self\">an artful and\u00a0beautifully-\u00a0calibrated series of Web pages <\/a>rich with reference resources and citations, they will be ready and willing\u00a0to answer these questions.<\/p>\n<p>More than two years ago, Ms. Cirigliano began\u00a0an intensive course of study with her academic mentor, Dr. Ronald Sharps, Associate Dean of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/arts\/\" target=\"_self\">MSU College of the Arts<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 Dr. Sharps&#8217; innovative\u00a0syllabus in The Business of Art, in turn,\u00a0had been honed through his\u00a0dedicated immersion in the sociological\/cosmopolitan philosophy and methodology of Pierre Bourdieu, (1930-2002) especially as manifested in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/11\/14\/books\/review\/Greif-t.html?_r=1&amp;scp=1&amp;sq=pierre%20bourdieu&amp;st=cse\" target=\"_self\">Bourdieu<\/a>&#8216;s classic concept of &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=6kHKmIMNoBYC&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;dq=%22pierre+bourdieu+cultural+production&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=i4XGenNw6-&amp;sig=SJ9qRPKzusHPMWiWgSn2ov9Gbcg&amp;hl=en&amp;ei=mzncTKWrL8P98Aa9prWNCQ&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=book_result&amp;ct=result&amp;resnum=7&amp;ved=0CEYQ6AEwBg#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" target=\"_self\">the field of cultural production<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As readers will\u00a0see vividly<a href=\"https:\/\/syriggs.wordpress.com\/cultural-field-maps\/\" target=\"_self\"> here<\/a>, Dr. Sharps&#8217; scholarship\u00a0took on very dynamic visualization with\u00a0his graphic Cultural Field Maps, now published for the first time by the CRC &#8212; with art direction by Brian Carter, Technology Coordinator for the MSU College of the Arts &#8212;\u00a0and astute\u00a0contextualization and commentary by Ms. Cirigliano.<\/p>\n<p>In her newly-edited volume (with Sarah Kenderdine)\u00a0<em>Theorizing Digital Cultural Heritage<\/em>, Fiona Cameron, Senior Research Fellow\u00a0in\u00a0Museum and Cultural Heritage Studies at the Centre for Cultural Research at the University of Western Sydney,\u00a0cautions against falling into\u00a0&#8220;the illusion of the immaterial;&#8221;\u00a0we would do well to heed her.<\/p>\n<p>As you delve\u00a0deeply into the born-digital\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/syriggs.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_self\">Play by Play: Theatrical Darwinism<\/a>, notice how\u00a0the blog\u00a0inspires thoughts of &#8220;digital cultural <em>objects<\/em>,&#8221;\u00a0their exponential multiplicity, and the commensurate responsibility of a site such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/creative-research-center\/\" target=\"_self\">Creative Research Center <\/a>to act as a living archive.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have always believed that it is\u00a0the <em>artist<\/em> who creates a work, but a <em>society<\/em> that turns it into a work of art,&#8221; the late <a href=\"http:\/\/kulturkenner.de\/static_pages\/1982-eroffnung-museum-abteiberg\" target=\"_self\">Johannes Cladders<\/a>, Commissioner of the German Pavilion at the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Venice_Biennale\" target=\"_self\">Venice Biennale<\/a> from 1982-1984, told<a href=\"http:\/\/www.edge.org\/3rd_culture\/bios\/obrist.html\" target=\"_self\"> Hans Ulrich Obrist <\/a>in an interview a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, <a href=\"https:\/\/syriggs.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_self\">Play by Play: Theatrical Darwinism <\/a>explores the ways in which the art and business of theatre have been made ever-more complex by the pressurized and competitive US and UK institutional marketplaces within which today&#8217;s arts enterprises\u00a0must be situated.<\/p>\n<p>And so, we encourage all\u00a0our faithful CRC <em>devotees<\/em>\u00a0to follow the fascinating intellectual, theoretical &#8212;
