General Member

Stipend

  • No stipend is provided to general members. However, LSAMP information, opportunities, and resources will be open to general members. For example, GRE books and courses by Kaplan have been covered by LSAMP for general members.
  • Although general members do not receive stipends, the participation of LSAMP activities by general members in the current year will add support to their scholar application for the following year.

What General Members Can Do

General members can attend scholar circles, study sessions, monthly meetings, LSAMP research conference, and obtain research support.

  • Eligibility Must be an undergraduate majoring in a STEM field, data analytics, or food science at MSU.
  • Can be full time or part time students.
  • GPA must be at least 2.0.
  • Conducting research as a general member will not be required, but highly encouraged.

Mentor

Stipend

  • Mentors will receive a $3000 stipend that will be split between the fall and spring semester: $1500 will be given at the end of the fall semester and the other $15o0 will be given at the end of the spring semester.
  • Payments will be held until the end of the semesters to ensure that mentors complete their roles and responsibilities, outlined below.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Attending the GS-LSAMP/NJ B2B Fall Research Conference is mandatory. The 2018 conference will be held on October 12. Leading the weekly scholar circle is mandatory (1 hour weekly); Two absences (cancellations) per semester are allowed for scholar circles.
  • Attending the monthly LSAMP meetings is mandatory (1.25 hr/month); One absence per semester is allowed for monthly meeting. Must be doing independent research.

Eligibility

  • Must be a full time undergraduate student majoring in a STEM field at MSU, data analytics, or food science.
  • Must have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
  • Must have participated as a scholar for at least a year before applying as mentor.
  • Must be conducting independent research or have research ready to do at the beginning of the academic year as a mentor.

Prospective mentor applicants should submit the online application. Both application and transcript must be submitted by Sunday, July 17, 2018.

Scholar

  • Scholar circles are mandatory (1hr/week).
    • Maximum of 2 absences during the semester.
      • The only situation that is considered excused is going to the hospital. Proof must be shown to the director and graduate assistant.
      • Everything else is unexcused and counts as an absence.
      • When a scholar exceeds two absences, the scholar then becomes a general member.
    • Making up absences:
      • If a scholar misses a circle, they must find another circle to attend before the week is over.
      • If the scholar’s original circle is towards the end of the week, then they must then attend two circles the following week in order to make up the absence.
  • Monthly meetings are mandatory (1.25 hr/month).
    • One absence maximum is allowed per semester.
    • When a scholar exceeds one absence, they will become an LSAMP general member.
  • Conducting research is mandatory.
    • By the end of fall semester, scholars must be linked to a professor to do research in the spring.
      • Scholars must have their professors email their mentor as proof that they are going to do research.
    • For those seniors who will be graduating in January 2019:
      • Scholars who will graduate in the fall semester must do the alternative and present to their circle at the end of the fall semester.

Eligibility

  • Must be a full time undergraduate student majoring in a STEM field at MSU, data analytics, or food science.
  • Must have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA. Students with a lower GPA can apply but must explain their situation.
  • Must be willing to do research.
