This annual award acknowledges researchers who ‘contribute to achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all.’ As the first author of the paper entitled Effectiveness of Different Approaches to Arsenic Mitigation over 18 Years in Araihazar, Bangladesh: Implications for National Policy, published in Environmental Science and Technology in 2019, along with co-authors Dr. Kazi Matin Ahmed and Imtiaz Choudhury (University of Dhaka), Dr. Prabhat Barnwal (Michigan State University), Dr. Lex van Geen (Columbia University) and Dr. Huan Feng (Montclair State University), Nadia received €2,000 at the Access to Drinking Water Webinar: co-creation in Africa #SGD6 webinar on 26 November, 2020. The paper, which is part of her dissertation research, compared four mitigation measures (well testing, intermediate wells, deep tube wells and piped water supply system) and their cost effectiveness for arsenic (As) contaminated drinking water in Araihazar, Bangladesh. The results showed that testing is the cheapest technique and reduced As exposure to the largest number of people followed by installation of private intermediate wells and deep tube wells. On the other hand, piped water supply system based on groundwater treatment is the most expensive technique and reduced exposure to the least amount of people.

This is a paper with impact, also beyond academia. It shows evidence-based research and the connection with policy makes it strong. The complete puzzle is shown, not just one part.

The review committee during the award ceremony where Nadia presented

Nadia Jamil came to Montclair State University as a PhD student in September 2014.
