David Galef, professor in the Department of English and director of the creative writing program, has written a new book, titled Brevity: A Flash Fiction Handbook<\/a>, published by Columbia University Press.<\/p>\n

“I told myself that I’d write a creative writing textbook only if I found a real gap in what’s out there. I finally found that area in flash fiction,” said Galef.<\/p>\n

The guide includes tips, techniques, and samples from authors including: Colette, Jorge Luis Borges, Roxane, Gay and Bruce Holland Rogers. Galef also traces the history of the genre from the short-short to nanofiction.<\/p>\n

“Good flash fiction is pithy, poetic, and punchy,” said Galef. “It’s not unique in those ways, but it sure does satisfy a lot of our present needs, from quick entertainment in this distracted, time-constrained era to stories that can be easily assigned for reading or writing in classrooms.”<\/p>\n
