Appel Coming to Montclair State<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Wednesday, March 22, <\/strong><strong>8:30-9:30 p.m.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Feliciano School of Business\u00a0Rm 314<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Noted author Jacob M. Appel will be appearing on campus 8:30-9:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 22, SBUS 314, for a fiction reading, followed by a Q&amp;A session. Appel&#8217;s first novel, <em>The Man Who Wouldn\u2019t Stand Up<\/em>, won the 2012 Dundee International Book Award. His short story collection, <em>Scouting for the Reaper<\/em>, won the 2012 Hudson Prize. His short fiction has appeared in more than two hundred literary journals and won numerous honors, including the Boston Review Short Fiction Competition and the William Faulkner-William Wisdom Award for the Short Story. His stories have been short-listed for the O. Henry Award and Best American Short Stories, among other places. This event is open to both the university and the community.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some of his story openers:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Artie Kimmel and I have worked the border together on Christmas Eve for each of the past eight years, because Artie\u2019s an agnostic Jew from Brooklyn, and because I haven\u2019t spoken to my sister since she shacked up with my ex-husband.&#8221; \u2013 <em>Boundaries<\/em><\/li>\n<li>&#8220;This story begins with one red rose, exquisite and ominous.&#8221; \u2013 <em>Pollen<\/em><\/li>\n<li>&#8220;The government paid me good money one summer to interview all of the single women in Lawless County, Arizona.&#8221; \u2013 <em>Counting<\/em><\/li>\n<li>&#8220;My dead wife is dating Greta Garbo.&#8221; \u2013 <em>Silent Theology<\/em><\/li>\n<li>&#8220;The vice consul\u2019s wife, Julie \u00d8deg\u00e5rd, had been giving Norwegian lessons to the chimney sweep for nearly two months, but she still hadn\u2019t decided whether her feelings toward him were maternal or romantic.&#8221; \u2013 <em>Hearth and Home<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Author Jacob M.
