{"id":206459,"date":"2017-10-20T14:13:58","date_gmt":"2017-10-20T18:13:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/entrepreneur\/?p=206459"},"modified":"2018-03-28T16:00:50","modified_gmt":"2018-03-28T20:00:50","slug":"social-entrepreneurs-discuss-motivations-challenges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/entrepreneur\/2017\/10\/20\/social-entrepreneurs-discuss-motivations-challenges\/","title":{"rendered":"Social entrepreneurs discuss motivations, challenges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Four women, whose resumes could land them in top-paying corporate positions, discussed how they chose the nonprofit path instead, during the \u201cSocial Entrepreneurs Changing the World\u201d event Oct. 19 at Montclair State.<\/p>\n<p>The panel discussion was part of the fourth annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/entrepreneur\/womens-entrepreneurship-week\/\">Women Entrepreneurship Week<\/a>, a program celebrated this year at <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/entrepreneur\/womens-entrepreneurship-week\/wew-around-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\">76 universities and nonprofits<\/a> in 22 states in the U.S. and 15 countries all over the world. Montclair State started WEW in 2014 as a way to inspire women entrepreneurs, and give college students all over the world the chance to network with female founders. In a keynote address to kick off the event, <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/entrepreneur\/womens-entrepreneurship-week\/wew-at-montclair-state\/speakers\/alfa-demmellash\/\" target=\"_blank\">Alfa Demmellash<\/a>, co-founder and CEO of Rising Tide Capital, shared her journey from Ethiopia to Harvard to Jersey City, where she started her nonprofit that helps urban entrepreneurs start businesses. Her goal in launching RTC was to provide economic opportunity to others, after she overcame hardships growing up in Ethiopia.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_206470\" class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/entrepreneur\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2017\/10\/Alfa-Demmellash-close-up.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/entrepreneur\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2017\/10\/Alfa-Demmellash-close-up.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Alfa Demmellash on stage with microphone.\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alfa Demmellash delivers the keynote address.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Later, as a panelist, Demmellash talked about the importance of leading from vulnerability and finding your power from that. But she also advocated having fun, letting yourself relax and finding trusted allies you can quit to (where it won\u2019t really count) when you\u2019re feeling discouraged.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/slideshow\/302849#0\" target=\"_blank\">Read Entrepreneur.com story about Women Entrepreneurship Week<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/entrepreneur\/denisse-rojas-marquez\/\" target=\"_blank\">Denisse Rojas Marquez<\/a> co-founded Pre-Health Dreamers to help undocumented students pursue health care careers after undocumented relatives had trouble accessing medical care. Marquez said it could be hard to find undocumented people willing to tell their story publicly\u2014an important tool for fundraising and building support. But eventually the people she was helping would realize \u201cwe\u2019re not going to gain anything if we stay quiet,\u201d she said. Marquez also mentioned that her age\u2014she started Pre-Health Dreamers in her late teens\u2014made funders think it was merely a student group. \u201cIt was really tough keeping my morale up,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_206473\" class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/entrepreneur\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2017\/10\/Denisse-Rojas-Marquez-laughs-as-Susan-MacLaury-speaks.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/entrepreneur\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2017\/10\/Denisse-Rojas-Marquez-laughs-as-Susan-MacLaury-speaks.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Denisse Rojas Marquez laughs as Susan MacLaury speaks\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Denisse Rojas Marquez, left, laughs as Susan MacLaury speaks<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/entrepreneur\/susan-maclaury\/\" target=\"_blank\">Susan MacLaury<\/a>, co-founder and executive director of Shine Global, a nonprofit film production company, said she was surprised to be invited to speak on a panel of entrepreneurs, because it wasn\u2019t a word she had ever considered to describe herself. But throughout the discussion, she exhibited hallmarks of entrepreneurship, such as her belief that starting a nonprofit \u201ctakes courage, but even more than that it takes a passion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/entrepreneur\/womens-entrepreneurship-week\/wew-at-montclair-state\/speakers\/laurel-dumont\/\" target=\"_blank\">Laurel Dumont<\/a>, a former public school teacher who has been involved in many entrepreneurial endeavors in Newark, advocated the power of never being afraid to ask. She shared how her nonprofit applied for funding that seemed like a long shot, and learned that hearing &#8220;no&#8221; is part of every entrepreneur&#8217;s experience, but sometimes won big for Newark. She advised aspiring entrepreneurs to do their homework, engage various stakeholders to understand the problem and hone their solution, and then to dive in and see what happens.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/felicianocenter.smugmug.com\/WEW-Social-Entrepreneurs-Changing-the-World-event\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>See photo gallery from the event.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/lY1xQrb3sCk\" target=\"_blank\">View video recap of the event.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Funding was a big topic of conversation during the event. The moderator, <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/entrepreneur\/linda-lacina\/\" target=\"_blank\">Linda Lacina<\/a>, managing editor of Entrepreneur Media, noted fundraising isn\u2019t a transaction but a relationship, and the panelists agreed that they needed to keep building a base of supporters.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_206475\" class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/entrepreneur\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2017\/10\/Linda-Lacina.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/entrepreneur\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2017\/10\/Linda-Lacina.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Moderator, in chair, asking a question\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Linda Lacina, moderator<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Marquez said she found that once her organization landed one well-known funder, it \u201cgave a little more security\u201d to other funders considering a gift or grant. MacLaury agreed, and also talked about a connection that led to the actress Eve Longoria providing three-quarters of the funding needed for a documentary about American child migrant farm workers. Dumont echoed the importance of referrals, noting many Americans donate $25 here, $30 there because someone they knew asked. \u201cThey don\u2019t remember the cause, but the friend who asked,\u201d Dumont said.<\/p>\n<p>MacLaury said Shine Global\u2019s board started as close friends and family, then people with expertise and then they tried to add wealthy people. \u201cIt\u2019s like building a web,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_206477\" class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/entrepreneur\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2017\/10\/Laurel-Dumont-on-panel-with-Alfa-and-Denisse.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/entrepreneur\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2017\/10\/Laurel-Dumont-on-panel-with-Alfa-and-Denisse.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Panelist with microphone, in chair on stage\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Laurel Dumont, center, answers a question<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Dumont, currently senior director of New Ventures at Leadership for Educational Equity, said it can be tough to be told \u201cno\u201d in fundraising, but she also figures the rejection is universal for nonprofit leaders. She said she might choose to take on the \u201cno\u201d if she believes there is bias involved but otherwise just walks away, noting you don\u2019t have to fight every fight. But Dumont did advocate diving in to get started, instead of waiting for everything to be perfect. \u201cDo what you can after hours.
