{"id":649,"date":"2016-08-08T11:20:41","date_gmt":"2016-08-08T15:20:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.montclair.edu\/entrepreneur\/?p=649"},"modified":"2018-01-22T14:13:29","modified_gmt":"2018-01-22T19:13:29","slug":"weston-science-scholars-learn-unexpected-lessons-in-3d-printing-class","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/entrepreneur\/2016\/08\/08\/weston-science-scholars-learn-unexpected-lessons-in-3d-printing-class\/","title":{"rendered":"Weston Science Scholars Learn Unexpected Lessons in 3D Printing Class"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">The biggest lesson to come from a 5-week summer course in 3D printing might have been \u201cexpect the unexpected,\u201d according to Montclair High School students who took the class as part of the Weston Science Scholars Program. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u201cWe didn\u2019t know what was going to happen next,\u201d said Tasnim Quayum, 14. \u201cMost of our (high school) classes are planned out, but here we were surprised about what was going to happen next.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Quayum, a sophomore, was one of 14 students at Montclair High School who took the 3D printing course with professors Iain Kerr and Jason Frasca. The students met for two hours each day as part of \u201can exploration to create new things, ideas, and novel paradigms the world has never seen before,\u201d said Kerr. While the course description would have contained phrases about 3D printing and design thinking, there were deeper lessons being taught.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u201cThe most important thing this course teaches us it to think in a way we don\u2019t usually,\u201d said Tegh Johar, 16, a junior, noting the instructors taught the students to \u201cexplore all the possibilities.\u201d<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Maya Joyce, a sophomore, liked how the students got to \u201cmess around\u201d with stuff as they learned to be more creative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u201cCreativity didn\u2019t come from ideas,\u201d said Joyce, 15, who said what she learned could be applied to her love of music. \u201cIt\u2019s more about doing, than thinking.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">One of the things the students did was create soap dishes. Then they needed to transform those creations into furniture. \u201cTo innovate you must start with something ordinary, such as a soap dish,\u201d said Frasca, explaining the approach used in the class. \u201cThen try to reveal all you can about the object. Think about why it was made, its purpose, aesthetics, etc. Then take what you learned about the object and block it. Ignore everything you learned about the object in order to create something new.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Catie Stanton, 15, said the class helped her to see things differently. \u201cWe\u2019re doing random, crazy stuff,\u201d the sophomore said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Joshua Rapoport, a 16-year-old junior, said the course gave him a new perspective on a so-called \u201cgood idea.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u201cI was very surprised we were not supposed to have good ideas,\u201d said Rapoport. \u201cThey\u2019re irrelevant because they\u2019ve almost certainly been thought of before.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">The students credited Kerr and Frasca with opening up their minds, as well as showing them how to design things with the 3D printers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u201c(They) really taught us a new way of thinking.
