The Lois Wagner Award

Presented by Dr. Marsha Grant-Ford in recognition of Lois Wagner’s 36 years of service to the profession and her mentorship to Dr. Grant-Ford. The award is presented to the athletic training student with the highest clinical anatomy grade.

Coder-Horn Outstanding Student Athletic Trainer Award

This award is initiated by the head athletic trainer, Mr. John Davis from the Montclair State Athletic Department. The award is sponsored by Dr. Vincent McInerny, team orthopedist, and Dr. Joan Schleede-Horn of the Department of HPPERLS. The award is given in honor of the memories of Professor Al Coder and Professor George Horn. The award is presented to the student athletic trainer who exhibits excellence in the classroom and the training room.

Vincent, Dorothy, and Teresa Farrell Scholarship

Vincent Farrell of the class of 1932 was known nationally and internationally as an Olympic basketball official, a track official, and a navy man of the finest quality. As well as honoring Vincent, this scholarship also honors his wife Dorothy and his mother Teresa. The recipient of the Vincent, Dorothy and Teresa Farrell Scholarship demonstrates high academic achievement and active participation in department activities.

The Joseph Nerenberg ’31 Award

Gerald A. Garafola Scholarship

Mr. Gerald Garafola ’24 was a colonel of the U.S. Air Force and was director of Physical Education for the city of Newark for many years until his retirement. At 86 years old, he is still concerned that good teachers be graduated from the Panzer School at Montclair State College. The Gerald A. Garafola Scholarship for distinguished contributions through participation and leadership in department activities and a grade point average of 2.8 or more.

Scott and Dorothea Harris Scholarship

Mr. Scott Harris was president of the Panzer College Board of Trustees, and with his skill managed a wonderful merger with Montclair State College. This scholarship in his and his wife’s name was started some years ago and is maintained by their children. The 2005 Scott and Dorothea Harris Scholarship for scholastic achievement of at least 3.0, and a good citizen of the college and the community, who gives promise of being a successful teacher of Physical Education.

Dean Martino Memorial Scholarship

Dean Martino was a member of the class of 1978. The class had a genuine fondness for each other and have remained good friends. When, not long after graduation, Dean died of cancer, his classmates set up this scholarship in his name. The Dean Martino Memorial Scholarship recognizes a junior Physical Education major demonstrating a specific quality of Dean: a willingness to give of himself and his time to others.

Dr. Krakower was formerly Professor and Chairman of the Department of Physical and Health Education of the City College of New York and currently resides in Florida. He sends his best wishes and is sorry he can’t travel to be with us for this presentation. Many of us were privileged to know Dr. Brown as an outstanding educator known across the country and in other nations as a progressive and creative leader in Physical Education. The Henry Panzer Award

Is sponsored by Dr. Hazel Wacker, Professor Emeritus in honor of the President of Panzer College of Physical Education and Hygiene from 1920 to 1931. Panzer College was founded in 1917 by Randall D. Warden and Matthias Machery, Directors of Physical Education in the city of Newark. Mr. Warden continued to direct Panzer until 1920 when Mr. Panzer became President. The Giardina Award for Excellence in Pre-Service Teaching

Dr. Giardina and her family members are grateful to her parents for instilling in each of them the value of education in fostering personal growth. Mr. Giardina served in the U. S. Army Air Corp and Air Force for 30 years and was a POW for three years, three months during WW2 in the Asiatic Pacific. Mrs. Giardina worked for 20 years in Federal Civil Service as an Executive Secretary and Supervisor in the Dept. of Engineering at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Louis and Florence Peragallo Scholarship

Reflects the ideas of Louis and Florence Peragallo by giving evidence of a love and passion to teach physical education in the schools; involvement in the state’s professional organization or in the Department of Exercise Science and Physical Education. Sue Fuller Memorial Scholarship

Sue Fuller, ’60, was known throughout the state as a fine woman and an excellent player in all phases of field hockey. At the time of her tragic death, this scholarship was set up by her friends, associates and family. Ashley Hammond was the recipient of the 1994 Dr. Richard W. Tews Memorial Award.
