{"id":206630,"date":"2018-08-23T13:51:25","date_gmt":"2018-08-23T17:51:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/facilities\/?p=206630"},"modified":"2018-12-06T16:05:25","modified_gmt":"2018-12-06T21:05:25","slug":"fire-safety-advisory-fire-challenge-banned-on-campus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/facilities\/2018\/08\/23\/fire-safety-advisory-fire-challenge-banned-on-campus\/","title":{"rendered":"Fire Safety Advisory: &#8220;Fire Challenge&#8221; Banned on Campus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Montclair State University <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/facilities\/our-services\/fire-safety\/\">Office of Fire Safety<\/a> has recently been advised that a hazardous social media trend, \u201cThe Fire Challenge,\u201d has recently regained popularity, prompting concern in regard to the safety and well-being of the campus community.<\/p>\n<p>The Office of Fire Safety strongly advises everyone within the Montclair State community to NEVER participate in the Fire Challenge. It is extremely dangerous and can be fatal.<\/p>\n<p>The Fire Challenge is an activity in which flammable liquids are applied to the body and then set aflame, while a video is recorded as proof of the participant\u2019s attempt.\u00a0 Those participating in this activity may experience immediate second-degree burns and, in severe instances, third-degree burns resulting in permanent nerve damage and death.<\/p>\n<p>On August 20, 2018, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/2018\/08\/20\/fire-challenge-leaves-michigan-girl-12-with-severe-burns-over-half-her-body.html\">a 12-year-old girl from Michigan<\/a> received second-degree burns covering 49 percent of her body in the Fire Challenge, which placed her in an intensive burn unit.<\/p>\n<p>To ensure the safety of all who live and work on our campus, such activities in all academic, administrative, recreational, and residential buildings are strictly prohibited.<\/p>\n<p>Please contact the Office of Fire Safety at 973-655-5401 for more information.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Montclair State University Office of Fire Safety has recently been advised that a hazardous social media trend, \u201cThe Fire Challenge,\u201d has recently regained popularity, prompting concern in regard to the safety and well-being of the campus community.
