{"id":11308,"date":"2024-01-02T16:00:54","date_gmt":"2024-01-02T21:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/faculty-excellence\/?page_id=11308"},"modified":"2026-02-02T22:46:27","modified_gmt":"2026-02-03T03:46:27","slug":"strong-student-campaign","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/faculty-excellence\/strong-student-campaign\/","title":{"rendered":"Strong Student Campaign: Information for Faculty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>All Red Hawks can be strong students.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em><strong>Faculty and staff from across the university have developed a campaign to raise awareness of the behaviors and actions that strong students develop and implement regularly.<\/strong> <strong><em>This<\/em> campaign makes explicit what it takes to become strong \u2013 it\u2019s small, simple acts that, in total, lead to success.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>You may not have come to teaching thinking you&#8217;d need to teach &#8220;<em>studenting&#8221; skills<\/em>, but, in fact, it&#8217;s those skills that many of our students need support in developing. Successful instructors teach something much harder than their discipline; they teach learning.<\/p>\n<p>Each week of the semester, a new theme is promoted: on social media, on digital screens, in messaging to students and in university classes. The Office for Faculty Excellence will alert instructors about the week&#8217;s theme and offer guidance for supporting students in developing the behaviors.<\/p>\n<p>Do you have feedback about the campaign? students will read the slide as they enter class and await for the lesson for the day to begin.<\/li>\n<li>Leave the slide up as you take attendance and attend to other details.<\/li>\n<li>To simply the transition to your planned lesson, copy each week&#8217;s slide into your own existing content.<\/li>\n<li>Copy a single slide into your own content slides, or copy the whole deck for your own use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You won&#8217;t be surprised by the slides&#8217; Make it obvious that class matters, and that it&#8217;s a place of active learning.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Spread out the points<\/strong> &#8212; students should start earning points by the second week of class, and they should continue to do every week throughout the semester.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Make your expectations explicit<\/strong>. For example,\n<ol>\n<li>If you want laptops closed, say so.<\/li>\n<li>If you want phones removed, say so.<\/li>\n<li>If you want every student to speak once in a class, say so.<\/li>\n<li>If you think students cannot learn in a class if they have not completed the reading, say so.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/navigate\/faculty-staff\/\">Navigate<\/a><\/strong> to identify students who are struggling. There are two reporting periods each semester, and instructors can also enter &#8220;alerts&#8221; at any time. <strong>Make referrals.<\/strong> Talk to students individually, pointing out concerns you have and referring students to resources.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/faculty-excellence\/instructor-essentials\/instructor-essentials-students-in-need-connecting-to-campus-partners\/\">Student Support Resources<\/a> for a full list of health services (mental and physical), academic support services, and other &#8220;life&#8221; support referral options.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/msu-cares\/\"><\/a>\u00a0<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"prpl-drawer\"><div class=\"prpl-drawer-header\">Additional Resources<\/div><div class=\"prpl-drawer-content\">\n<p>These are just a few positive student learning behaviors we recommend. belief that attendance matters and plan what you&#8217;ll do when a student&#8217;s attendance is poor.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/faculty-excellence\/assignments-assessments\/\">Assignments &amp;
