Instructors from any discipline can support healthy behaviors.<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<p>This week\u2019s \u201cBe a Strong Student\u201d message to students asks them to take care of their health. Students who do so may increase their ability to focus and to succeed in their coursework. Here are some strategies instructors can implement to help support their efforts:<\/p>\n<h1><strong>Promote healthy behaviors<\/strong><\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li>Remind students about the Resources section on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/faculty-excellence\/teaching-resources\/clear-course-design\/the-montclair-syllabus\/\">Montclair Syllabus<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Model healthy behaviors and strategies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Recognize the essential value of mental health self-care.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>Convey your interest in students&#8217; wellbeing.<\/li>\n<li>Share what you do to manage a world of distractions and stress.\n<ul>\n<li>If you are looking for something to try and possibly recommend, see the <a href=\"https:\/\/hminnovations.org\/meditation-app\">Healthy Minds Program App<\/a>, a free tool developed by neuroscientist Richard Davidson, which serves as a cornerstone to programs at <a href=\"https:\/\/centerhealthyminds.org\/programs\/student-flourishing\">University of Wisconsin<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/csc.virginia.edu\/page\/student-flourishing-initiative\">University of Virginia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/prevention.psu.edu\/focus-areas\/promoting-human-flourishing\/\">Penn State<\/a>, and recommended by NYTimes Wirecutter, among other reviewers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Remind students to make time for sleep, exercise, healthy eating, and self-care practices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Remind students about <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/health-promotion\/\">Health Promotion<\/a><\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and their resources, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/health-promotion\/weekly-workshops\/?\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>weekly workshops<\/strong> <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">aimed at promoting well-being (such as mindfulness meditation and crafting).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Encourage students to take advantage of <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/campus-recreation\/\">Campus Recreation<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> options.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Encourage students to participate in the new <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/campus-recreation\/exercise-is-medicine-on-campus\/\">Exercise is Medicine &#8211; on Campus<\/a> <\/strong>program<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. This program provides students with a free, one-time consultation with an on-campus exercise professional focused on using physical activity as a tool to improve health, sleep, stress, focus, and overall well-being, and the website also provides tips, strategies, and encouragement.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1>Connect students to campus resources<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Notice the signs of students who may need help and:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Refer students to the <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/student-health-center\/?\">Student Health Center<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Connect students to <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/montclair-cares\/?\">Montclair Cares<\/a><\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">which offers resources and connections when someone is feeling alone, stressed, afraid.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Remind students of the <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/hunger-free\/red-hawk-pantry\/\">Red Hawk Pantry<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and the<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/hunger-free\/food-champion-program\/?\"> Food Champion Program\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Advertise Mental health services<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/counseling-and-psychological-services\/\">Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/counseling-and-psychological-services\/services\/lets-talk\/\">Let\u2019s Talk \u201cwalk-ins\u201d<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/counseling-and-psychological-services\/services\/group-therapy\/\">Group Therapy\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Online therapy resources (<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/counseling-and-psychological-services\/services\/tao\/\">TAO<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/counseling-and-psychological-services\/uwill-free-teletherapy-for-students\/\">Uwill Teletherapy<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">)<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">TAO is also available through this <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/montclair.instructure.com\/courses\/179908\">CAPS Canvas Community<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>CAPS provides access to grant funds available for treatment off-campus.<\/li>\n<li>Students are eligible for a free <a href=\"http:\/\/Calm.com\">Calm<\/a> subscription through May 17, 2026.
