Here are some strategies instructors can implement to help support their efforts:<\/span><\/p>\n<h1>Have a clear late work policy<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Balance compassion with high expectations:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Send the message \u201cextensions on deadlines are for exceptional circumstances&#8221; recognizing that there may be special circumstances warranting extensions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Make clear that submitting work late impedes learning; some students have become habituated to soft deadlines and don&#8217;t understand their effect on learning.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Encourage students to complete their work by deducting points &#8212; but be careful to not overdo it and have students fail classes unnecessarily.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Use Canvas\u2019s<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/t5\/Instructor-Guide\/How-do-I-apply-a-Missing-Submission-policy-in-the-Gradebook\/ta-p\/963\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u201cmissing submission policy\u201d <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to set Canvas to post a default grade at a defined time.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Be clear about make-up classwork: establish whether and how students can make up missed classwork.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1>Offer clear assignments<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Provide students with clear assignments <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/faculty-excellence\/assignments-assessments\/?\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(see template and other tips<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/faculty-excellence\/assignments-assessments\/?\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Scaffold<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> major assignments, helping students to work on the assignment in pieces rather than rushing to complete them all at the very last minute.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Provide <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/faculty-excellence\/teaching-resources\/clear-course-design\/plan-your-course\/rubrics\/?\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">rubrics:<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> rubrics help students understand expectations and requirements (and help instructors grade).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1>Encourage and support students<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Remind students of options for help, including student\/office hours, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/center-for-academic-success-and-tutoring\/?\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CAST<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/center-for-writing-excellence\/?\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CWE<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/library\/2021\/10\/22\/book-an-appointment-with-a-librarian\/?\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sprague librarians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Offer clear, timely, and actionable feedback; <strong>returning assignments within two weeks<\/strong>, for example. See tips on<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/faculty-excellence\/plan-for-grading\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> planning for grading<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Encourage students to regularly check the Canvas gradebook to gain an accurate idea of their grade.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Encourage them to complete a time management activity. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">See these examples provided by CAST:<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px\"><i><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/faculty-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/195\/2024\/01\/Time-Management-Activity.pdf\">Time Management Activity<\/a>(opens as PDF)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/faculty-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/195\/2024\/01\/Time-Management-Hand-outs.pdf\">Time Management Handouts<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(opens as PDF)<\/span><\/p>\n<h1>Be a &#8220;strong&#8221; role model<\/h1>\n<p>Instructors can also model similar &#8220;strong&#8221; behaviors in their teaching.
