Icebreakers allow students to see connections with other students, fostering belonging.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Sample Icebreakers for Cultivating Community<\/h2>\n<p>Sample social icebreakers from <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/ctl.columbia.edu\/resources-and-technology\/teaching-with-technology\/teaching-online\/community-building\/#:~:text=Community%20building%20in%20the%20classroom%20is%20about%20creating%20a%20space,McMillan%20%26%20Chavis%2C%201986).\" target=\"_blank\">Columbia University Center for Teaching and Learning<\/a>:<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Interviews<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li>Put students in pairs.<\/li>\n<li>Create and distribute a handout with a few questions as a conversation starter: What is your name? What is your academic major? Why did you choose your major? Why are you taking this class?<\/li>\n<li>Ask students to alternate interviewing each other.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(Barkley et al., 2014, p. 59)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Connections<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li>Put students in different groups of 3-4. In their groups, students list as many things as they can that they all have in common.<\/li>\n<li>Each group reports back to the rest of the class after the small group discussion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(Barkley et al., 2014, p. 60)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Soundtrack of your life<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li>Have students share a) a set of 5-10 songs that represent the soundtrack of their lives or b) a set of 6 songs with 2 representing their past, 2 representing their present, and 2 representing their future.<\/li>\n<li>Then ask students to explain why they included each song.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(Dunlap &amp; Lowenthal, 2010, p. 62)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Where are you from?<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li>On a shared map (e.g., <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.polleverywhere.com\/examples\/customer-concentration\" target=\"_blank\">interactive response map<\/a> on PollEverywhere), ask students to add their name, location, and introduce themselves, and identify one interesting fact about their location.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(McGrath et al., 2014)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Your favorite quote<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li>On a virtual whiteboard (e.g., <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/support.zoom.us\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/115005706806#h_b125534d-7755-4b66-859d-9120cf22abaa\" target=\"_blank\">Zoom whiteboard<\/a>, <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/jamboard\/answer\/7424836?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">Google Jamboard<\/a>) or other online platforms (e.g., discussion boards on CourseWorks, Google slides or documents), ask students to post their favorite quote and explain why.<\/li>\n<li>Then have students respond to posts of other students\u2019 that resonate with them. They could either leave a comment or \u201clike\u201d others\u2019 posts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(Chlup &amp; Collins, 2010)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.lsa.umich.edu\/inclusive-teaching\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/853\/2021\/12\/Icebreaker-Grab-Bag.pdf\">Icebreaker Grab Bag curated by the Inclusive Teaching at University of Michigan (loads as PDF)<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Icebreakers related to course content or academics<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Invite students to look through the syllabus and share what topic they find most appealing. Have them share in groups of 3-4, and discuss similar and different choices.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In groups, share how you learn best: What kind of learning environment, teaching styles and activities enable you to learn deeply and thoroughly?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Put students into groups of five and give them 10 minutes to come up with an idea for a new movie or product that is related to a text or topic related to your course. After ten minutes of preparation, have groups\u00a0 share their pitch with the rest of the class; when everyone has shared, have everyone vote on which pitch deserves \u201cfunding.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Create your own &#8220;RiceBreaker&#8221; (<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Spry, 2022)&#8211;an<\/span>\u00a0icebreaker t<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">hat connects to course content and demonstrates the value of different perspectives. In a class on Identity Politics, for example, Spry asks students: \u201cHow does your family or culture cook rice?\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Icebreakers for asynchronous classes<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>These <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">can easily be done through a discussion board. Here are some sample activities:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Virtual Name Tags<\/strong>. Create a discussion board that provides a \u201cname tag\u201d template:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hello, my name is:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">My major is:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In my spare time, I like to:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">My favorite food is:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ask students to complete and post their name tags as a reply to your thread. Then have them look for others they have something in common with and reply to their posts.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Useless Talent Show<\/strong>. What is one thing you can do that is <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a &#8220;useless&#8221; skill or talent?
