{"id":213,"date":"2017-11-20T15:14:35","date_gmt":"2017-11-20T15:14:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/forward-thinking\/?page_id=213"},"modified":"2017-11-20T15:14:35","modified_gmt":"2017-11-20T15:14:35","slug":"innovative-programs-tackle-teacher-shortage","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/forward-thinking\/fall-2017\/innovative-programs-tackle-teacher-shortage\/","title":{"rendered":"Innovative Programs Tackle Teacher Shortage"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"prpl-row\"><div class=\"prpl-column one-third\">\n<p><strong>Since its beginnings more than 100 years ago as a teachers college, Montclair State has been a leader in teacher education.<\/strong> Today, the University is at the forefront of reversing a national teacher shortage \u2014 felt most in inner cities and in science and math \u2014 in part, with innovative, federally funded teacher preparation initiatives such as the Newark Montclair Urban Teacher Residency Program, which is funded by two consecutive, five-year, multi-million-dollar U.S. Department of Education grants.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"prpl-column two-thirds\">\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/forward-thinking\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/11\/newark-teachers-program.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/forward-thinking\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2017\/11\/newark-teachers-program.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"teachers and students in elementary school hall\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Residency teachers working in Newark<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>Indeed, U.S. News &amp; World Report ranks Montclair State among the nation\u2019s top 100 graduate schools for education and places its graduate programs in both elementary and secondary teacher education among the top 20 in the country \u2014 a distinction unmatched by any other New Jersey institution.<\/p>\n<p>The residency is an immersive apprenticeship program for Master of Arts in Teaching candidates who commit to teaching in Newark public schools for three years after they graduate. As residents, they teach on-site for an entire academic year. After graduation, the program provides three years of additional mentoring and induction support.<\/p>\n<p>The University\u2019s Center of Pedagogy Director <strong>Jennifer Robinson<\/strong> says the program has not only prepared and placed outstanding teachers in Newark\u2019s schools, it has given faculty an opportunity to prepare teacher candidates in the schools. \u201cBecause faculty are on site teaching candidates how to teach,\u201d she says, \u201cgraduates are much better prepared.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe have received well over $25 million in recent years to support STEM teacher preparation and provide our students with the knowledge and skills they need to be excellent teachers.\u201d<\/p>\n<footer><cite>Tamara Lucas<\/cite><\/footer>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>According to <strong>Susan Taylor<\/strong>, the program\u2019s director, who earned her master\u2019s degree from Montclair State in 1982, the University researchers studied what urban schools need in order to better address the shortage of qualified teachers in Newark. \u201cWe\u2019ll be one of the only programs in New Jersey to emphasize exemplary elementary mathematics education through our teacher candidates,\u201d Robinson says.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the National Science Foundation\u2019s Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program encourages talented STEM students to teach in highneed urban schools.
